The Bulldogs came into renewed national prominence with the addition of Mark Richt as head coach, formerly the offensive coordinator of the Florida State Seminoles under Bobby Bowden for two of the Florida State championships, 1993 and 1999 . Since Richt's head coaching tenure began, Georgia has won two SEC championships, in 2002 and in 2005 , and has been a participant in the SEC conference championship game three out of four years.

Overall, Georgia has been recognized as consensus National Champions twice: in , 1946 , and 1968 . Georgia also has won the third-most SEC football championships, with twelve, behind only Tennessee (13) and Alabama (21). Vince Dooley , former Georgia head coach and Athletic Director, is one of the most respected coaches in both Georgia and college football history, having won the 1980 National Championship and 6 SEC Titles.

The Bulldogs play in historic Sanford Stadium in Athens, Georgia . Sanford Stadium, with a capacity of 92,746, is the fifth largest on-campus stadium in the USA.
