He was the son of Johann I , King of Saxony (1801-1873) and his wife Amelia of Bavaria (1801-1877), daughter of Maximilian I Of Bavaria . On 11 May 1859 at Lisbon he married the Infanta Maria Ana Of Portugal (1843-1884), the daughter of Maria II Da Gloria Of Portugal and her consort, Ferdinand II of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha. Eight children were born of this marriage:
