George Montagu, 1st Duke Of Montagu




He was born in 1712 at Cardigan House , Lincoln's Inn Fields , London to George Brudenell, 3rd Earl Of Cardigan and his wife Elizabeth Bruce. His maternal grandparents were Thomas Bruce, 3rd Earl Of Elgin and Lady Elizabeth Seymour, grand-daughter of William Seymour, 2nd Duke Of Somerset .

George was baptised on 1 August 1712 at St Giles-in-the-Fields . He married Lady Mary Montagu, daughter of John Montagu, 2nd Duke Of Montagu , on 7 July 1730 in the aforementioned church and they had two children:


He matriculated at Queen's College, Oxford on 1 July 1726 and graduated from there on 31 January 1729 with a Master Of Arts . Lord Montagu was baptised with the name of George Brudenell, but legally changed it to George Montagu on 15 July 1749 . In 1752 , he was made a Knight Of The Garter . In 1766, he was created Duke Of Montagu and Marquess of Monthermer, and in 1786, Baron Montagu Of Boughton with special remainder. From 1789 to 1790, he was Lord Lieutenant Of Huntingdonshire .

He died in 1790 aged 77, without surviving male issue and the Dukedom of Montagu and Marquessate of Monthermer became extinct.
