Like all chickens, they will fight over food, territory, or mates, but the fights exist generally only to establish dominance within a group and rarely result in serious injury. The only time that a rooster will fight to the death in nature is when protecting his flock from a predator. [1 ] Because gamecocks are bred for aggression, however, they are ideal for training in cockfighting. Today, cockfighting, like most Blood Sport s, is outlawed in most states of the United States and in many countries around the world, and the term has become better known as a nickname for athletic teams. The University Of South Carolina , Jacksonville State University in Alabama , Sumter High School ( Sumter, South Carolina ) and Screven High School ( Sylvania, Georgia ) use the name for their athletics teams. "Gamecock" is sometimes used as a nickname for people who are considered fierce fighters. During the American Revolution , General Thomas Sumter earned the nickname in his battle against the English forces in South Carolina . SEE ALSO EXTERNAL LINKS
