Gabriel Slaughter ( 1767 Culpepper County Virginia – 19 September 1830 Mercer County, Kentucky ) Democratic-Republican party was the 7th governor of Kentucky ( 19 October 1817 – 7 September 1820 ). Before entering politics Slaughter was a farmer, and a colonel the Kentucky regiment at the battle of New Orleans . He was a member of the Kentucky house of representatives in 1797 and the Kentucky State Senate 1816 – 1820 . In 1816 he was elected lieutenant-governor and became governor on the death of Gov. George Madison ( 1817 ) serving the remaining years of Madison’s term. Slaughter's governorship was complicated by the financial panic of 1819 and he spent the majority of his term working to stabilize that state's economy. He is interred in the his family cemetery in Mercer County, Kentucky. EXTERNAL LINKS |
