Gtd Orion

Orion Class Destroyer
In the first Freespace , the ''GTD Bastion'', ''GTD Galatea'', and numerous other interstellar destroyers served as capital ships and commanding vessels for the various fleets of the GTA. The ''GTD Bastion'' and ''Galatea'' were considered especially unique examples, as they were considered sister vessels. When the ''Galatea'' was destroyed, all remaining pilots onboard the Galatea were automatically defaulted to serve on the ''Bastion''.

The ''Bastion'' serves a special purpose in both Freespace games. In Descent: Freespace, the Bastion's pilots were sent to destroy the '' SD Lucifer '' while it was en route to the Sol system. Although the original plans called for the ''Bastion'' to accompany its fighters into subspace and provide fire support, the ''Bastion'' was unable to catch up to the Shivan destroyer. It is probable that if the original plans had been carried out, the ''Bastion'' would have been destroyed along with the ''Lucifer'' when the subspace node exploded.

In Freespace 2, as the Shivans assemble their Juggernaut fleet in Capella, the ''Bastion'' is used to collapse the Epsilon Pegasi node leading into Capella to trap the Shivans beyond GTVA-controlled space. The Bastion, having been decommissioned, carries several meson warheads into subspace where it is remotely detonated to seal the node.

The ''GTD Galatea'' was destroyed by the Shivan destroyer ''Lucifer'' during the Descent: Freespace campaign.

The ''GTD Carthage'' was one of the retrofitted Orions that fought against the NTF and the Shivans during FS2.

An Orion measures at approximately 2020 meters and can carry up to 10 full fighter squadrons (120 combat spacecraft). It serves as the heavy hitter of the Terran fleet with powerful beam cannons and heavy plasma turrets. Due to it's low speed and weak anti-fighter defense an Orion must always have ample fightercover.
