:was an administrative district of New France that reached from the Gulf Of Mexico northwest to the current border of Canada , first named '' Louisiana '' in 1682 , which remained under France 's rule until the Louisiana Purchase of 1803 ceded control to the United States .
:consists of both the Acadiana and Greater New Orleans regions. Although Cajun and Creole cultures are predominant and unique to the region, they share influences with many other Native Americans , Settlers , former Slaves and Immigrants whose cultures make up the fabric of Southern Louisiana . Some French Louisiana influences can also be found in adjacent cities such as Alexandria and Baton Rouge . :Modern French Louisiana is composed of "Cajuns descended from Acadian settlers expelled out of what is now eastern Canada; black or mixed-race Creoles from the Caribbean, West Africa and elsewhere; and white Creoles largely from France. Some native people also took up French through close contact with Francophones." (The Associated Press) |
