As many of the Maoist -oriented groups formed in the United States New Communist Movement of the 1970 s were shrinking or collapsing, the Freedom Road Socialist Organization was formed in 1985 to try to consolidate these forces into a single political organization that would have some longevity. The FRSO was founded from the Proletarian Unity League , the Revolutionary Workers Headquarters and the Organization for Revolutionary Unity. From there, Freedom Road merged with other groups, including the Amílcar Cabral - Paul Robeson Collective in 1988 and the Socialist Organizing Network in 1994 . Freedom Road's predecessor groups supported Self-determination , up to and including independence, for Blacks and Chicanos in the United States. Freedom Road continues that line on the National Question and considers it a defining feature of its politics. In 1999 , Freedom Road Socialist Organization split into two groups, both of which have kept the organization's name. To differentiate beween these two identically-named groups, each has commonly been identified by its publication name — ''Fight Back Newspaper'' and ''Freedom Road Magazine'', respectively. The Freedom Road magazine group has not published a new issue of its magazine since 2003 and this has lead to a tendency to differentiate the two groups according to political line instead. The Fight Back group continues to identify as a Marxist-Leninist organization, and continues to recognize countries such as Cuba , North Korea , Vietnam and China as Socialist . The Freedom Road Magazine group criticizes the term 'Marxism-Leninism' as being too orthodox, and does not consider any country in the world today to be socialist. It has adopted a plan called " Left Refoundation " with a goal of uniting previously divided sections of the left, including some Trotskyist and Social-democratic organizations, to put together what it believes will be an organization with true revolutionary potential.
