Freedom Air is a Low-cost Airline based in Auckland , New Zealand . It operates scheduled passenger services from New Zealand to Australia and Fiji , as well as chartered services within New Zealand. Its main base is Auckland International Airport . CODE DATA HISTORY The airline was established in 1995 as a response to the commencement of discount services between Australia and New Zealand by Kiwi Airlines and started operations on 8 December 1995 with a single Boeing 757 aircraft. It was formed as South Pacific Air Charters by Mount Cook Airline . It is now wholly owned by Air New Zealand . By 2004 , Freedom Air's fleet had expanded to five Boeing 737-300 aircraft and it was providing direct non-stop services to the Australian cities Brisbane , Gold Coast , Sydney , and Melbourne from their base in Hamilton as well as Auckland , Wellington , Christchurch , Dunedin , and Palmerston North . Freedom briefly served on the New Zealand main trunk domestic routes such as Auckland - Christchurch , but ceased these services to concentrate fully on providing value Trans-Tasman flights. In June 2005 Freedom Air took delivery of the first of four new Airbus A320-232 aircraft that are being leased from parent airline Air New Zealand to replace the four Boeing 737-300 aircraft currently in service. The A320s will operate between Auckland Christchurch , Dunedin , Hamilton and Wellington to holiday destinations including Fiji and the Gold Coast .
