Smith was married to punk pioneer and poet Patti Smith until a sudden fatal Heart Attack , at age 45. Patti Smith's 1996 album '' Gone Again '' features a tribute to her late husband. The Smiths had two children, Jesse Smith and Jackson Smith , the latter of whom presently plays guitar in the Michigan band Back In Spades . The band Sonic Youth took its name from Smith's nickname.
