He was born at Eilenburg in Saxony , and showed musical talent early; he was enrolled in the Thomas School at Leipzig , and published his first works in that city. He was Kapellmeister at Bernburg in 1841 , then moved to Zürich in the same year. He became musical director at the court theater in Brunswick from 1852 to 1882 . He retired to Wiesbaden , and died there in 1885. He composed over 500 pieces during his lifetime, his songs being most popular with the best known being ''When the Swallows Homeward Fly''.
