Frankford Township, New Jersey




Incorporated in 1797 as a much larger area, Lafayette later separated in 1845 and then Branchville , which is completely surrounded by the township, separated and became incorporated in 1898. The township is the home of the Farm and Horse Show, which relocated from Branchville to the Plains Road in 1976 when it needed more acreage for expansion. Now called the Sussex County Farm & Horse Show / The New Jersey State Fair, it is the site of numerous activities and events throughout the year. Another large recreation area is Skylands Park , a ballpark which hosts the New Jersey Cardinals , a Class A Minor League Baseball affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals with seating for 4,300 people.


GEOGRAPHY

According to the United States Census Bureau , the township has a total area of 91.8 Km&2 (35.4 Mi&2 ). 88.3 km&2 (34.1 mi&2) of it is land and 3.4 km&2 (1.3 mi&2) of it is water. The total area is 3.70% water.


DEMOGRAPHICS

As of the Census 2 of 2000, there were 5,420 people, 1,839 households, and 1,473 families residing in the township. The Population Density was 61.4/km&2 (158.9/mi&2). There were 2,295 housing units at an average density of 26.0/km&2 (67.3/mi&2). The racial makeup of the township was 98.15% White , 0.39% African American , 0.06% Native American , 0.39% Asian , 0.00% Pacific Islander , 0.50% from Other Races , and 0.52% from two or more races. 1.77% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 1,839 households out of which 37.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 70.4% were Married Couples living together, 6.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 19.9% were non-families. 16.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 6.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.81 and the average family size was 3.17.

In the township the population was spread out with 25.0% under the age of 18, 6.6% from 18 to 24, 26.4% from 25 to 44, 29.0% from 45 to 64, and 13.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 96.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.9 males.

The median income for a household in the township was $64,444, and the median income for a family was $69,449. Males had a median income of $49,781 versus $31,383 for females. The Per Capita Income for the township was $25,051. 5.1% of the population and 3.5% of families were below the Poverty Line . 5.3% of those under the age of 18 and 6.0% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.


GOVERNMENT


Local government

The Township of Frankford operates under the Township form of government. Three Committee Members are elected at large, one each year, for a three year term. The Mayor is appointed to a one year term by the Township Committee members at the annual reorganization meeting.

Members of the Frankford Township Committee are Mayor William Hahn, Deputy Mayor Robert McDowell and Carol Ann Kristensen.

Federal, state and county representation

Frankford Township is in the Fifth Congressional District and is part of New Jersey's 24th Legislative District.






EDUCATION

Students in Kindergarten through eighth grade attend the Frankford Township School, located in Branchville.

For grades 9 - 12, students attend High Point Regional High School , located in Sussex and part of the High Point Regional School District . Attending ths school are students from Branchville , Frankford Township , Lafayette Township , Sussex Borough and from Wantage Township .
