A longtime associate of Charles Luciano and Frank Costello , Scalise first joined Albert Anastasia 's organization during Prohibition , eventually becoming a lieutenant when during the Castellammarese War he and Anastasia were allegedly involved in the murder of Masseria Underboss Peter Morello and Loanshark Giuseppe Periano outside his office in East Harlem on August 15 , 1930 . After the end of Prohibition Scalice became involved in Drug Trafficking with Luciano, delivering payments in exchange for heroin, which would eventually be shipped into the United States . During the next two decades Scalice would run Mafia controlled construction companies and drug distribution in the Bronx , until his death on June 17 , 1957 when he was killed by an unknown gunman, supposedly Anastasia associate Jimmy Squillante , outside a local fruit stand. While it was suspected that Scalice's murder was most likely related to an incident in which a 20 kilo heroin shipment was seized and for which he refused to reimbuse his partners, some have speculated that Albert Anastasia may have ordered Scalice's death for selling of Mafia memberships for $50,000. His brother Joseph Scalice , after threatening to avenge his brother's murder, also disappeared after a welcome home party on September 19 , 1957 , at which he was allegedly killed and dismembered.
