He was born at Pistoia and studied violin with Giuseppe Torelli . He became a professional violinist, holding important posts in Bologna . He became musical director at St. Philip's Cathedral in his home town of Pistoia , where he remained until his death. Much of his music is presumed to have been destroyed after his death; only 43 published works and a handful of manuscripts are known. He is known to have composed Oratorio s, but only his instrumental works are currently performed. Among these, his Concerto Grosso s and Sinfonia s show a wealth of creativity and invention.
