Fountain County is a County located in the U.S. State of Indiana . As of 2000 , the population is 17,954. The County Seat is Covington 6 .


GEOGRAPHY

According to the U.S. Census Bureau , the county has a total area of 1,031 Km&2 (398 Mi&2 ). 1,025 km&2 (396 mi&2) of it is land and 6 km&2 (2 mi&2) of it is water. The total area is 0.56% water.

HISTORY

Fountain County was formed in 1826. It was named for Kentucky Maj. James Fontaine who was killed at Harmer's Defeat on October 22, 1790, near modern Ft. Wayne, Indiana , during the Northwest Indian War .


DEMOGRAPHICS

As of the Census 2 of 2000, there were 17,954 people, 7,041 households, and 5,041 families residing in the county. The Population Density was 18/km&2 (45/mi&2). There were 7,692 housing units at an average density of 8/km&2 (19/mi&2). The racial makeup of the county was 98.71% White , 0.11% Black or African American , 0.20% Native American , 0.18% Asian , 0.01% Pacific Islander , 0.28% from Other Races , and 0.52% from two or more races. 1.06% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 7,041 households out of which 32.60% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.10% were Married Couples living together, 8.00% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.40% were non-families. 24.80% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.60% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.52 and the average family size was 3.00.

In the county the population was spread out with 26.20% under the age of 18, 7.20% from 18 to 24, 27.90% from 25 to 44, 23.10% from 45 to 64, and 15.60% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 98.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.60 males.

The median income for a household in the county was $38,119, and the median income for a family was $43,330. Males had a median income of $33,957 versus $21,631 for females. The Per Capita Income for the county was $17,779. 8.50% of the population and 6.20% of families were below the Poverty Line . 10.40% of those under the age of 18 and 6.90% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
