Fort Fisher was a Confederate stronghold near Wilmington, North Carolina , during the American Civil War . Considered the "Gibraltar of the South", Fort Fisher was first Attacked in December 1864 and fell to Union forces on January 15 , 1865 in the Second Battle Of Fort Fisher .
