In fan literature of the Star Trek Expanded Universe , Fleet Admiral Nogura is said to be a very old friend of the Kirk family who served with James Kirk's father. Several novels by Pocket Books speak of Nogura as the Admiral who had first promoted Kirk to Captain and had given him command of the ''Enterprise'' for its first five-year voyage. Nogura later had to pressure Kirk to accept promotion to Rear Admiral, rather than remain a Captain and command a starship. NOGURA IN THE ''STAR TREK'' NOVELS Nogura's given name is identified as "Heihachiro" in the novelization of ''Star Trek: The Motion Picture'', authored by Gene Roddenberry , the creator of the franchise. This is repeated in the novels "Enterprise", detailing the first days of Kirk's command, and "The Lost Years", showing the end of the five year mission, are the two primary literature sources in which Nogura makes major appearances. These sources, however, are not considered canon by the current owners of the franchise. Nogura also makes an appearance in the novel, ''The Pandora Principle'' and is referred to in many other novels written in the 1980s, before The Next Generation debuted. Given Nogura's name, it is assumed by many Star Trek fans that he is of either Oriental or East Asian background; however, since the character is never actually seen on camera, this has yet to be determined.
