Information About

Filippo Vadi

Filippo Vadi was a native of Pisa , Italy . Little is known about him other than the fact that he appears to have been a mid to late 15th Century Fencing master linked in some way to the tradition of Fiore Dei Liberi and that he dedicated a fencing book to the Dukes of Urbino , in the last quarter of the 15th century.

His teachings, centred primarily around the ''spada da doi mani'' or Two-handed Sword , are contained within the lavishly illustrated manuscript entitled '' De Arte Gladiatoria Dimicandi ''. Vadi's manuscript appears to date from between 1482 and 1487 , where it was catalogued in the library of the Dukes of Urbino; the manuscript itself is dedicated to the young Duke Guidobaldo Da Montefeltro (the same man mentioned in the '' Book Of The Courtier '' by Baldassare Castiglione ).

Vadi's treatise is now studied alongside other surviving manuscripts in the study and reconstruction of Historical European Martial Arts .
