Stravinsky composed ''Feu d'artifice'' for Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov , on the occasion of his daughter's wedding. Rimsky-Korsakov unfortunately died before the work's premiere, and was never able to hear it. ''Feu d'artifice'' helped develop Stravinsky's reputation as a composer, although it is not considered representative of the his mature work. The work has hints of bi-tonality but is for the most part, in comparison with Stravinky's later work, very tonal. It has the form of a scherzo but is still labled "orchestral fantasy" because of its short length. Alexander Ziloti conducted the premiere in 1909. SELECTED RECORDED VERSIONS
