Federation For American Immigration Reform

FAIR promotes policies to improve border security and stop Illegal Immigration , and to reduce legal immigration into the United States to around 300,000 people a year. FAIR's policy studies emphasize the environmental, economic, and social consequences of mass immigration.

The FAIR website has free tools to help supporters send pre-written faxes and emails to politicians, as well as to receive action alerts.

PRINCIPLES

FAIR advocates "7 Principles of True Comprehensive Immigration Reform:"
:1. Cut the Numbers
:2. No Amnesty or Mass Guest-Worker Program
:3. Protect Wages and Standards of Living
:4. Major Upgrade in Interior Enforcement, Led by Strong Employers Penalties
:5. Stop Special Interest Asylum Abuse
:6. Immigration Time Out
:7. Equal Under the Law

The FAIR website contains detailed explanations of each principle and why FAIR considers it important They can be found here .

ACTIVISM

In 2004, FAIR joined the Protect Arizona Now (PAN) initiative to limit state services to immigrants through a state referendum. PAN, in addition to receiving FAIR funding, relies on a FAIR study that determines that Arizona taxpayers pay $1.3 billion to cover health, education, and incarceration costs of illegal immigrants. This FAIR study is contradicted directly by the Wells-Fargo Thunderbird School of International Management, an international business graduate school in Phoenix, AZ, which in 2003 put out a study called "The Economic Impact of Arizona-Mexico Relationship". The study concludes that immigrants contribute $599 million to Arizona in income and sales taxes every year, while costing the State $250 million in services and $30 million in uncompensated health care. This generates a fiscal surplus for the state of $318 million per year.

CRITICS OF FAIR

FAIR's policy rhetoric and analysis have often been claimed by critics to be Anti-immigrant , inflammatory, and partisan. For example, an article in the June 2004 issue of its monthly publication, ''Immigration Report'', is titled "Democrats offer 'No Illegal Immigrant Left Behind' Act." In the article, FAIR writes that the number of people who would receive amnesty under the proposed bill, called the SOLVE Act, would "likely run into the tens of millions," adding that "untold millions" would be able to procure fraudulent documents which would result in an "incalculable" number of family members entering the United States legally. Their involvement in the PAN initiative was marked by use of such terms as "native-born Arizonans".
