Fate (comics)

HISTORY

During Zero Hour , Extant stripped the original Doctor Fate (Kent & Inza Nelson) of their power while aging them beyond their years. The items of Doctor Fate, Helmet of Nabu , Cloak of Destiny and Amulet of Anubis were scattered throughout the dimensions and eventually appeared in Egypt.

A archaeological thief and grave-robber called Jared Stevens was sent to collect these items and bring them back to the United States. While arriving in the U.S., Jared was summoned by Kent and Inza Nelson (the original Doctor Fate) to their tower in Salem so that they could claim the items.

However, a being called Kingdom needed the items to open a gateway to the Dreadlands and Earth and sent two of his minions after these items of power. After the Nelsons recovered the items from Jared, the items rejected them and they could no longer become Doctor Fate. Kingdom's minions appeared and killed the Nelsons.

Jared grabbed the Amulet of Anubis as a weapon, but it was crushed in his hand by one of Kingdom's minions. The Tower of Dr. Fate exploded in a white light. Jared was injured from the battle and used the Cloak of Destiny as a bandage around his arm.

Jared was summoned by Nabu, a Lord of Order who wished to control him as he once did the original Doctor Fate to battle chaos. Nabu told Jared the path that lies ahead of him as Earth's defender. However, Jared refused and not even Nabu's powers could persuade him. Nabu was angered and reluctantly left the plane of the DC Universe.

Jared didn't want the jobs of Earth's cosmic defender but accepted his fate. Adopting the name of Fate, he melted the Helm of Nabu into a knife and throwing ankhs to become the new Fate. Fate returned to Earth with a red ankh on his right eye. Fate, filled with both chaos and order magicks, is the fulcrum of Chaos and Order.

Mordru, the Dark Lord, killed Fate by fatally stabbing him with his own dagger. He appeared at Wesley Dodds' funeral, and with his dying breath, warned the JSA that both he and Wesley Dodds had been murdered by "The Dark Lord."

Hector Hall then took over the role of Fate as the new Dr. Fate .
