Information About

Farallon Plate

Sea Floor Spreading creates symmetrical patterns on both sides of the Ridge where new material is extruded. Magnetic Anomalies create mirrored stripes on either side of the active ridge. So much of the former spreading zone that was extruding new material along its welt has been subducted under North America, that now the remaining sections of sea floor ''increase in age'' as you move off the West Coast of North America. These remaining stripes form a rough mirror image of the lost subducted material and enable geologists to reconstruct an outline of the Farallon plate's paleohistory.
