Fantoft stave church ('''Fantoft stavkirke''') is a reconstructed Stave Church in Fana , Bergen . It was originally built in Fortun , a village deep inside the Sogne fjord around year 1150 . In the 19th century this church was threatened by demolition as were hundreds of other stave churches in Norway . The church was bought by consul F. Gade and saved by moving it in pieces to Fantoft in Bergen in 1883 . On the 6th of June 1992 the church was totally destroyed by arson. The fire was initiated by Varg Vikernes according to the judges of the trial. He is as of 2006 serving a 21-year jail sentence for murder and arson. Reconstruction of an exact copy of the church was promptly initiated, and finally completed in 1997 . |
