Fannie Flagg (born September 21 , 1944 in Birmingham, Alabama ) is an American author and actress. She was born '''Patricia Neal''', a name she evidently could not use, as there was already an Oscar-winning actress named Patricia Neal . ACTING CAREER Her acting credits include the Broadway production of '' The Best Little Whorehouse In Texas '', the movies '' Five Easy Pieces '', '' Stay Hungry '', '' Grease '', and ''Crazy in Alabama'', as well as minor roles in various television shows. She was also a popular celebrity guest on Game Show s like the '' Match Game ''. WRITING CAREER Since the early 1980s , she has focused more on writing, producing such bestselling novels as ''Daisy Fay and the Miracle Man'' and '' Fried Green Tomatoes At The Whistle Stop Cafe ''. She wrote the screenplay to '' Fried Green Tomatoes '', the well-received 1991 movie based on the latter book, for which she was nominated for an Academy Award . ''Fried Green Tomatoes'' starred Jessica Tandy , Kathy Bates , Mary Stuart Masterson , Mary Louise Parker , and Cicely Tyson . She has also written ''Welcome to the World, Baby Girl!'' and ''Standing Near the Rainbow.'' A Christmas book ''A Redbird Christmas'', came out in November 2004. A new book called ''Can't Wait Until I Get Into Heaven'' is coming out in Summer, 2006. PERSONAL LIFE Flagg is openly Lesbian , and was the long-time companion of Author Rita Mae Brown , who outed her. She has Dyslexia and Adult Attention-deficit Disorder .
