Eyeshield 21 Characters

The following is a list of major characters from the Anime and Manga '''Eyeshield 21''':

DEIMON DEVIL BATS

(泥門デビルバッツ)
  • Logo: Red Devil Bat, a nonexistent breed that bears a striking resemblance to Hiruma Yoichi.

  • The home team of the manga and anime series, ''Eyeshield 21''. This team represents the Deimon Private Senior High School (泥門高等学校 ''Deimon Kōtōgakkō''). At first, there were only three members in the Deimon American Football Club. However, after its inaugural year, there were only two members (Yoichi Hiruma and Ryokan Kurita) after Gen "Musashi" Takekura left. This remained the case until Hiruma found Sena Kobayakawa and his amazing running ability. The team's chant is "Kill'em! YA-HA!"(ブッツバス!YA-HA!!''Buttsubasu! YA-HA!!'')

Sena Kobayakawa a.k.a. Eyeshield 21

.]]
小早川 瀬那 ''Kobayakawa Sena'' is the main character of '' Eyeshield 21 ''. Due to his diminutive stature and weak outward appearance, Sena was bullied by his peers in primary school, and always had to be rescued by his childhood friend, Mamori Anezaki. He became a " Gopher ", retrieving items and running errands for his tormentors, which allowed him to build up his speed and dodging ability. Soon after entering senior high school, Sena was forced into playing American football by Hiruma; Hiruma had seen Sena running away from the Hah brothers, who wanted to beat him up, and recognized Sena's running ability. To conceal his identity, Sena wears an eyeshield to cover the upper part of his face during practices and matches. Hiruma picked the alias "Eyeshield 21" after a similar Eyeshield 21 player in America, so that Sena could have a Secret Identity and thus not be recruited by other athletic clubs. Sena is the football club's secretary, using the job as a front to cover his activities as Eyeshield 21. Although he joined the American football club unwillingly, Sena eventually grew to love American football and being part of the team.

Sena's first game was against the Koigahama Cupids, which almost ended in disaster when he accidentally handed out turf cleats to Ishimaru the running back, causing him to slip and twist his ankle. However, this led to Sena's debut as Eyeshield 21, in which he was able to display his incredible speed. His second game was against the Ojo White Knights, where he met his rival Shin and the Spear Tackle for the first time. Though the Devil Bats lost badly, the experience proved to be a major turning point for both Sena and Shin. Sena became driven to turn the lies about Eyeshield 21 into truths, and Shin was humbled when he realized that no matter how strong he became, his Spear Tackle would be useless if he couldn't catch someone moving at the Speed of Light pace. The two later made a promise to see each other at the final game.

Over the next few games, Sena develops a couple of new techniques, including some fake handoff plays and the Devil Bat Dive. This move involves Sena running at full speed toward the goal line, then jumping high over the defending linemen in a corkscrewing motion. However, this is a very dangerous maneuver; even Hiruma forbids him to use it more than once or twice during a game, and then only for a clinch point. It would not do for Eyeshield 21 to be injured early in the game, thereby destroying team morale.

During elementary school, Sena didn't have a proper running technique until he met Riku (who is currently a Safety on the Seibu Wild Gunmen team). Sena cannot sustain running at high speeds for very long, and may even faint if he overextends himself, as is shown during the match against the NASA Aliens. His skill lies in rapid changes of pace, which allows him to accelerate from a slow run to an extremely fast run. Sena's fatal flaw is that, right before he accelerates, he stops in front of his opponents, giving them a chance to tackle him. However, during the Death March training in the United States, he begins to learn to overcome that flaw by kicking a rock straight and eventually zig-zagging for over 2000 km (the rock breaks in half during the final part of Death March). Hiruma threatens to make Sena run the whole 2000 km all over again if he loses the rock (or even half of it). To him, it's still one rock! Sena ends up kicking both pieces at the same time. Due to a mishap in which he ends up in a tryout for the San Antonio Armadillos (a pro football team), he develops a new maneuver called the Devil Bat Ghost. This involves shortening his steps without stopping, then suddenly breaking into a much faster pace, which leaves a blurry afterimage like a ghost. With this technique, Sena can dodge any blockers as the Ghost Effect confuses his opponents, causing them either to misjudge his speed or tackle the wrong image. Another move he developed was the Devil Bat Tornado, which involves him to spin out at the point of impact, thereby sliding around his opponent.

  • Character Statistics:

  • #40-yard-dash Record: 4.2 seconds (high school record), 5.0 when not under pressure, though he has been estimated by Shin and Homer to run at a rate of about 4.6 during games. His 'Change of Pace' ability makes his speed very erratic and difficult to measure.

Youichi Hiruma

蛭魔 妖一 ''Hiruma Youichi'' is Deimon's De Facto team captain—when he says his word is law, he's not kidding. He's the mastermind and captain of Deimon's American Football club, has pointy ears and sharp teeth, and looks and acts like a Demon . His signature phrase is a loud "YA-HA". Hiruma is usually carrying some kind of firearm (usually concealed), including but not limited to Flamethrower s, Submachine Gun s or Bazooka s (you'd think that the Japanese gun laws would have stopped him, but Hiruma probably has some dirt on the local police and town officials), which he fires mostly for intimidation. He also owns a very vicious dog named Cerberus (ケルベロス ''Keruberosu'')(named after the hell hound Cerberus ), which he uses to scare team members into running faster (although in one of the books it is explained that Cerberus is actually a stray who stays with Hiruma in exchange for food). Hiruma was the first person to recognize Sena's talent for running and dodging.

Hiruma lies, cheats, bullies and manipulates people to do his bidding. His most potent weapon is probably his "Book of Threats" (originally the "Devil's Handbook"), a small black notebook filled with everyone's darkest secrets, which allows him to Blackmail anyone into acquiescing to his demands. This book is not limited to the secrets of students and teachers at Deimon; Hiruma has been known to blackmail city officials, work crews and storekeepers. On a single day, he was able to obtain the use of Tokyo Tower for a day and a lot of ice for the Tower of Hell tryout. At one point, Hiruma even "borrowed" a tank. The rest of his information, incriminating or otherwise, which he accumulates from Scouting on other teams, is stored in his Laptop Computer . He's also a very good hacker; at one time he hacked into the sprinkler system before and during the Koigahama game, and once he got into all the computers of ''Football Monthly'' to send a fake e-mail. The only person who isn't scared to confront him directly is Mamori.

Although portrayed as a cruel slave-driver and an inhumane captain at times, his passion for football (and winning) is unrivaled, and he is known to goad, tempt, bribe, force and inspire the team to victory. Though his methods of training the team may seem sadistic, he only wants to bring out the best in each member, and if he has to torture them and put them in a constant state of fear, then so be it. At times, it's the only way for his teammates to realize their full potential.

Although he always seems to be demonically energetic, Hiruma has a vulnerable side as well, which only Mamori and the team's coach can recognize. The team tryout consisted of carrying bags of ice to the top of Tokyo Tower before they melted. Yukimitsu, despite his weakness, frailty, and having his ice stolen by another contender, keeps trying and eventually reaches the top. Unfortunately, by that time his ice has melted, but after seeing how much Yukimitsu strained his body to keep going, Hiruma slips in an ice cube so Yukimitsu will make the team. Also, when Hiruma kicks a player in the rear without saying anything, it's his way of praising the person for a job well done.

His main drive is to win the championship, but there is an underlying reason for all his schemes. Unlike other schools, Deimon has a rule that all its students must cease their extra-curricular activities after the spring of their 3rd year; this includes the sports clubs. For both Hiruma and Kurita, this is the LAST chance to be associated with the football team.

Hiruma is also a very good gambler. An expert strategist with a clever and cunning demeanor, he is a force to be reckoned with, both on and off the field. Hiruma excels at his position as a quarterback, as he constantly practices his passes. He is also a master at faking the hand-off and pump fakes. His favorite plays involve putting his opponents into a state of confusion, which takes advantage of Eyeshield 21's speed and Monta's unorthodox catches. His game strategies can be considered insane at times, but there's no mistaking his mad genius at pulling off a win. Hiruma was extremely frustrated when he had not been able to pass during games, and though he doesn't really show it, he is quite happy that he has a wide receiver in Monta.

He gives nicknames to many people, usually using the prefix "Damn": Damn Pipsqueak or Damn Secretary = Sena; Damn Monkey = Monta; Damn Manager = Mamori; Damn Baldy = Yukimitsu; Damn Fatty = Kurita; Damn Fatty Jr. = Komusubi; Damn Huh-huh or Damn Hah Brothers = Kuroki, Togano, Jumonji; etc.

There is a mystery surrounding the fact that Hiruma, along with Mamori and Yukimitsu, actually excels in his studies. It probably has to do with blackmail. No one seems to know who his family is or where he lives, but most readers assume he lives in the football clubhouse (and probably uses the school's restrooms, the locker room's shower, and gets groceries from the Son-Son market). He's been known to chew excessive amounts of gum (sugarless, of course).

Hiruma also has a history with Kongo Agon of the Shinryuji team and is one of the very few people that can get under his skin. Due to their history, Hiruma knows Agon's weakness, but has yet to reveal it. He said by letting Yukimitsu play is the key to getting Agon under control.

Ryokan Kurita

栗田 良寛 ''Kurita Ryōkan'' is the largest and strongest player in the Deimon American Football club. Kurita lives in a temple with his father, who is the director of a Buddhist sect. His father believed that to grow up big and strong, a young boy had to eat a lot—but it seems he has overfed his son. Kurita, as his name would suggest, has a head shaped like a Chestnut . He is a very sweet, kind-hearted individual, and the only thing bigger than his body is his heart. He became Sena's second friend after entering Deimon High School. When playing, Kurita shouts his Kiai "Funnurghaba!" when exerting extra effort. Before coming to Deimon, he attended the Shinryuuji school. Like Hiruma, Kurita is crazy about American football and tries to encourage everyone to join, though he doesn't go to the same extremes as his demonic compatriot. He can get so worked up that he's been known to begin morning practice as early as 2:00 AM! His "apprentice" is Komusubi, who practices with him whenever he can. His biggest dream is to compete in the Christmas Bowl. He is somewhat dim-witted, nearly giving away Sena's other identity, though he is immediately silenced by Hiruma. He is insanely strong, and has accidentally destroyed a small truck by hugging it (encouraging other characters to run away from his hugs). Though he normally looks rather comical, he's dangerous when he's actually fired up. Pity the unfortunate soul who faces off against his near-unstoppable rushes.

Mamori Anezaki

姉崎 まもり ''Anezaki Mamori'' is Sena's overprotective and motherly childhood friend. Mamori's mother met Sena's mother in a cooking class, and Mamori and Sena have been friends ever since. Her mother is half-Japanese, half-American which makes Mamori 25% American and 75% Japanese. Mamori has been protecting Sena from bullies since primary school, to the point that Sena has grown up never having to stand up for himself. Mamori joined the American Football club to watch over Sena and prevent any bullying by the other members (particularly Hiruma). However, despite her 'joining the American Football club just to protect Sena' claim, she eventually becomes an excellent manager who knows the rules inside and out and makes up strategies for the team (since she has trouble with computers, she does it all on paper—super-analog). Mamori doesn't recognize Eyeshield 21 until he reveals his identity during the match against the Bando Spiders team. A lovely girl, Mamori excels in all her studies except art, and helped Sena with his high school entrance exam. She is also a member of the school's disciplinary committee. Though she is constantly butting heads with Hiruma, she eventually sees a softer side to the Devil Bats' quarterback.

In the anime, Mamori did try to find out Eyeshield 21's identity, mostly because when she was making the telephone contact list, she needed a number to get in touch with him. Hiruma got around this by assigning himself the responsibility of relaying all messages to Eyeshield 21 (the guns were ablaze during that phone call "YA-HA!"). In the end, even when Sena was forced to remove his helmet to save her from the Zokugaku Chameleons, his identity remained secret to her, thanks to her own disbelief and Hiruma's tricks (it was a funny episode). She eventually gave up trying to learn who he was. Mamori has been known to block bullet passes from Hiruma at times (once when they were aimed at Sena for daydreaming, and again after the completion of the Death March when everyone fell asleep in their hotel room). Prior to the start of the Shinryuji game, Mamori cuts her hair, claiming she just wanted to change her image.

Taro Raimon a.k.a. Monta

Taro Raimon (雷門 太郎 ''Raimon Tarō'') or ''Monta'' is the wide receiver of the Deimon American Football club. He resembles an ape, particularly a Chimpanzee , in many ways. Although he is as short as Sena, his large hands, acrobatic moves, and leaping ability make him a very effective receiver; he can even catch Hiruma's bullet passes with one hand. He has a habit of posing every time he makes a spectacular catch, raising one hand into the air and pointing with his finger. He also has the habit of attaching 'Max' to nearly everything he does, since he believes that one should give 100% effort in all endeavours. He was named Monta after Sena mistook his name as Montarō Rai (Sena originally thought his name was "Kaminari Montarō", since the character 雷 can be pronounced as "rai" or "kaminari"). He begins to like being called 'Monta' after Hiruma tells him the nickname 'Monta' was supposedly derived from Joe Montana . Monta doesn't know that Joe Montana is a quarterback, not a wide receiver.

Monta makes his first appearance after the first match against the Ojo White Knights. He tried out for Deimon's baseball club, inspired by the Shuei Bears player, Masaru Honjō, an Outfielder known for his spectacular catching. However, due to his abominable throwing skills, Monta was only able to make it to the third string, the reserves of the reserves who never really get to play. He was devastated over the sheer hopelessness of it all, for he knew and realized that the only thing he was remotely good at was catching. Monta has a crush on Mamori. He's always trying to win her heart (and fails miserably), but she always gives more attention to Sena. At first, he rejected Sena's offer of joining the club. However, Hiruma later conned him into joining the team by putting up an act whereby the whole American Football club is under the jurisdiction and control of Eyeshield 21 (whereby Eyeshield 21 is the big, bad boss), and lied to Monta that Mamori joined the club because she fell for his skills. He also told Monta that Eyeshield 21 was only playing with Mamori, and that he was planning to dump her as soon as possible. Sure, Hiruma lied, but Monta decides for himself that he would become a catching hero in football instead of in baseball like Masaru Honjo (a pro baseball player who gives Monta his glove and becomes his idol). After finding out Eyeshield 21's real identity, Monta enters a friendly rivalry with Sena. He's quite ambidextrous, meaning that he is very flexible and can even pick up things with his toes like a chimp. Though he initially hated the moniker Monta due to being likened to a monkey, it actually suits him, especially since he's crazy about bananas.

An interesting thing to note is that in the anime, Hiruma does not trick Monta into joining; he joins on his own accord. Also, Monta seems to have a younger appearance in the anime, with a more rounded, youthful face.

The Hah Brothers

Though constantly re-affirming that they are not brothers, the Hah brothers give the impression that they are since they are constantly together. They are called the Hah brothers due their Schtick of saying "Hah?" in rapid succession with ''crescendo'' (rising volume) in response to almost anything. This schtick starts from Togano and ends with Kuroki. Ex. Togano: HAH?! Jumonji: HAAH?!! Kuroki: HAAAH?!!! The three Hah brothers consists of three delinquents:
  • Kazuki Jumonji

  • (十文字 一輝 ''Jūmonji Kazuki'') Juumonji is the apparent leader of the group. In some of the episodes including the NASA Aliens game and the Death March, we see him as a leader who gets the other two to follow. He sports an X-shaped scar on his right cheek, which was originally supposed to be used to get Kurita arrested. He was the only one of the three to figure out that Sena was actually Eyeshield 21. He seems to be the more thoughtful (in a sort of positive way) of the three. He always seems to keep the three-some (includes him) together, and is considered the "eldest brother" of the three (not _by_ the three, though). He gets fired up a lot.

  • Koji Kuroki

  • (黒木 浩二 ''Kuroki Kōji'') Kuroki sports dark hair of medium-length. He seems to be the most violent of the three, and his most notable weapon is his metal bat. When playing defense, Kuroki can sometimes play Linebacker. The other two stick to Defensive Line. (In the first book end-of-the-book character introduction, he is shown to be firing a Kikôha as he yells "HUH-DOE-KEN!!!") Also a good Arcade fighting game player.

  • Shozo Togano

  • (戸叶 庄三 ''Toganō Shōzō'') Has long spiky blonde hair, and constantly wears sunglasses. Can usually be seen reading Manga . He seems to be the most quiet of the three. Likes Jump, but puts it aside for a while when going to America,"Sigh, I guess American comics are alright."

They first appear in the series by ordering Sena to buy stuff for them, much to Sena's disbelief, as he had only met them in class that morning. After Sena made a final dash and jumped into the MRT carriage, Hiruma, who spotted Sena's talent for running and dodging, beat up the brothers and took pictures of them naked; he later kept the negatives for future Blackmailing purposes. During the Zokugaku Chameleons Exhibition Match , they were searching for the negatives of the pictures when Kurita stumbled upon them. Kurita wrongly assumed they were intending to join the club as linemen. Later, because of the appearance of Kurita's apprentice, Komusubi(and his constantly looking down upon the brothers), they competed with him at the Tokyo Tower and managed to pass Hiruma's qualification test (fittingly called the Tower of Hell). The three decided to quit the team later and forget about the negatives of their pictures. However, after being beaten up by Banba of the Taiyo Sphinx, they changed their minds and set out to become great linemen. With the help of the Zokugaku punks they mastered the "Juvenile Delinquent Murder Method," which involves grabbing the opposing lineman by the sleeve, taking a diagonal step up, then slamming the opponent face-first into the turf by using the opponents driving force against himself (basically, this is the principle method for judo and akido). Kuroki and Togano were considered as trash by the editor of a sports magazine after their match against Taiyo Sphinx, but later proved themselves as linesmen during the games against Nasa Aliens. During the game against the Americans, they also learned a new maneuver called the Sweeper, which utilizes the three of them to clear a running path for Eyeshield 21. This forms a protective line that moves ahead of the running back. It was here that Jumonji shows his respect for Eyeshield by promising to open a line for him to get through.

The Hah Brothers have a running rivalry with Komusubi, who always shows them up in tests of strength and determination. Hiruma approves of this war of the linemen, which drives the Hah brothers to become better players. During the Death March training in America, two of the Hah Brothers, Kuroki and Togano were about to abandon the team due to the harsh training and lack of determination, but they changed their minds once they learned that Hiruma and Kurita will no longer be able to play after their third spring season. They still had a chance in their second year. Jumonji also pointed out that they earned more respect as linemen rather than as useless punks.

Manabu Yukimitsu

(雪光 学 ''Yukimitsu Manabu'') Yukimitsu is the bench player of the Deimon Devil Bats. He makes his first appearance after watching the Zokugaku vs Deimon Exhibition Match . He has a big forehead, which looks consistent with the first signs of Male Pattern Baldness , though he does later grow more hair. His mother wants him to be a studious person and makes him study from day till night in addition to going to Cram School . Yukimitsu has missed many festivals and games throughout his childhood and youth, and regrets it terribly. After watching the match between Zokugaku and Deimon, he decides to join the American Football club to fulfill his dreams; to be a winner, to be part of a game, rather than studying all day. He wanted to have sweet memories of his high school that didn't have anything to do with studying, even if he just played once. Yukimitsu was able to pass Hiruma's "Tower of Hell" qualifying test only by Hiruma's pity. He's usually sitting on the bench; supporting the main players and waiting for a chance to play with them. A couple of times, he has inadvertantly inspired plays, such as the tactic of neutralizing the Shuttle Pass with the Nasa Aliens, (when Cerberus bit his wrist), which gave Sena the idea of tackling the muscular and well-built American quarterback by the arm, rather than the midsection. Though not physically fit, Yukimitsu has a talent for memorizing plays and pass routes. One of the three smartest students at Deimon, with Mamori and Hiruma. Trains just as hard, if not harder, than everyone else. At one time in America, Yukimitsu once nearly gave up and was in danger of being cut from the team and abandoned. However, thanks to his friends' support, he was able to muster up the courage to complete the Death March. Though he wasn't chosen as a regular at the start of the Fall Tournament, he finally begins to play when the Devil Bats had to face against the Shinryuji Nagas. He was intitally thought of as a joke, but that was all according to Hiruma's scheme. His main skill lies in the ability to calculate the positions of the opposing team members and where they are going to run, in relation to where Hiruma can throw the ball, allowing him to instantly choose the place to receive the pass. His many years of studying allows him to make snap judgements as to which option route to take. Grows his hair out between the start of Fall Tournament and the Shinryuji game.

Daikichi Komusubi

(小結 大吉 ''Komusubi Daikichi'') Komusubi is one of the linemen of the Deimon Devil Bats. He isn't very fast nor tall, but he makes up for it with his indomitable will and power. He decided to join the Devil Bats after seeing the Zokugaku Exhibition Match . Daikichi was highly impressed by Kurita's amazing strength and build, and decided that he wanted to become Kurita's "apprentice". He was able to join the team after surviving the Hell Tower qualifying test, beating out the Hah Brothers. Komusubi has taken to bunking at Kurita's house, and joining Kurita in waking up as early as 2AM to go training. He doesn't talk much, and apparently speaks the language that only "true men" can understand, which consists of strange grunts and one-word sentences. It is still confusing as to how people like Komusubi's father, Kurita, and some of the members of the Nasa Aliens team, can comprehend what he is saying. (It should be noted that Mamori seems to be able to understand him as well.) He always seems to be the thorn in the side of the Hah Brothers, showing them that he's stronger than them and spurring them on to become stronger. Has been shown lifting something around 20 high-schoolers at once (!!). Though they hate each other, Hiruma knows that their rivalry is what really drives them to become better players. Due to his small size he's often used as a pulling guard for trap blocking, as shown in the game with the Taiyou Sphinx. He doesn't like to be teased about his small stature and does his best to prove that size is not the only thing that matters. Komusubi is short like his mother is, but also has his father's strength. He learns all on his own how to deal with taller opponents, using the Rip Tackle and his Fast Start technique, bowling over even the tall linemen of the Kyoshin Poseidon. He proved to be instrumental in the final seconds of the game, pushing down his opponent for Eyeshield 21 get through to score, enabling his team to win.

Tetsuo Ishimaru

(石丸 哲生 ''Ishimaru Tetsuo'') Ishimaru is the Devil Bats' second Running Back . Ishimaru was recruited from the Track team by Sena who took over half of his paper route for him. He played in the Koigahama match, but was injured due to Sena being unable to discern between the types of Cleats . Like all the other sports clubs, he wants to recruit Eyeshield 21 for his phenomenal speed, but thanks to the colored visor on Sena's helmet, he has no idea who he is. That and the fact that Hiruma also frightens and blackmails everyone who tries to find out the Devil Bats' star player's identity. Ishimaru continued to play for the Devil Bats, even though no one notices his presence in the team. However, his obscurity plays to his advantage when playing since no one notices when he is handed the ball. Many teams curse to themselves in front of him after the play, usually saying that, "he has no presence," or that,"We didn't notice him". He's the track and field captain, which is why Hiruma usually refers to him as "Track Star". Ishimaru often blocks for Sena on screen passes and other trick plays. When he actually learns that Sena is Eyeshield 21, he froths at the mouth and "breaks". Like Yukimitsu, Ishimaru also grows out his hair, but no one seems to notice. Is refered to as the Stealth Running Back or just "plain" Ishimaru.

One interesting thing to note is that Ishimaru has an American look-a-like named Jimmy Simard. Sena mistakes Jimmy for Ishamaru during the tryout with the San Antonio Armadillos. Jimmy actually made the cut for the pros, despite some bullies' cheating and foul tactics, thanks to Eyeshield 21's help.

Yohei Satake

(佐竹 洋平 ''Satake Yōhei'') Satake is a b-baller who gets blackmailed by Hiruma to become a "support" player for the football team. Satake is perverted and isn't a very important character. In the manga, during junior high, he stole some underwear out of the locker room of the girls swim team, not knowing that the underwear belonged to a 50-year-old cleaning woman. He spent the following summer lamenting over that fact. In the anime, Hiruma blackmails him by threatening to reveal that he used to wet his bed until he was in junior high. He hasn't done much for the team, but sticks with it longer than most of the other "support" players.

Kenta Yamaoka

(山岡 健太 ''Yamaoka Kenta'') Yamaoka is another b-baller who gets blackmailed by Hiruma to become a "support" player for the football team. Yamaoka has a thing for Ai Kago. He spends 98% of his allowance to buy her CDs, products, and other stalking supplies. Every morning when he wakes up, he kisses a poster of her. Like Satake, he sticks around longer than most of the other support players. He doesn't do much and is always trying to put the moves on Mamori.

Doburoku Sakaki

(酒奇 溝六 ''Sakaki Doburoku'') He first appeared during the Beach football match on a beach in America. He was a coach to Hiruma, Musashi and Kurita, and taught them how to play American football. However, he ran off to America later since he owed some loan sharks 2 million yen after gambling (and losing miserably). He intended to look for talented people in America to play American football but got into Beach football. There, he trained the team Too Tattoos, and after undergoing his strict training regimens, they became better players. Now, since the Devil Bats have managed to pay his debts (via much gambling on Hiruma's part in Las Vegas), he has became Deimon Devil Bat's manager and personal trainer. An interesting fact to note is that he and Ojo's trainer, Shogun, were teammates at Sengoku university's American football team, and were known as "The Twin Japanese Blades". During those days, he was a tight-end. Back then, the both of them participated in the Death March, with Shogun being on the offense line and Doburoku specializing in defense. However, all their other teammates gave up during the last 200 or so kilometres of the Death March, and Doburoku overexerted himself in pushing the truck, resulting in an unrecoverable injury on his right knee - he didn't want the Devil Bats to undergo the Death March training for fear that they might ruin their potential athletic careers just as he ruined his. But, they wanted to become stronger - and so, they decided it was hell or nothing - and participated in the Death March. Doburoku loves drinking sake. (In an aside, it is revealed that he has many, many different gourds, all of them looking the same, but all containing a different kind of alcoholic beverage.) Most of the times, he is somewhat afraid of Hiruma, and sometimes looks to him for decisions, especially during the Death March.

#He looks like a kung-fu master (those you see in typical shounen manga) yet he drinks alcoholic drinks from his gourd.
#He's never washed his clothes and has worn the same clothes for three years.
#When he returned back to Japan, he started work as the school's janitor; his salary, however, will go into Hiruma's account (whereby it will be used for maintenance and improvisations on the Devil Bats' team's part).

Suzuna Taki

(瀧 鈴音 ''Taki Suzuna'') Suzuna is a cute blue hair girl who's always wearing rollerblades. She came to America and hitched a ride with one of the bikers of a bike gang. Sena first met her after he got lost halfway through the Death March and was surrounded by a whole lot of American bikers - Sena being Sena, he couldn't really communicate with them. However, one biker mentioned the words 'Japanese girl', 'Football player', and 'Japan', and Sena assumed said biker was talking about Mamori, and immediately went off in search of the aforementioned Japanese girl. The 'Japanese girl' term was actually referring to Suzuna, and 'Football player' Natsuhiko, her brother. Suzuna was looking for her brother, and in that same respect, met up with the 'Football player' assuming that it was Natsuhiko. The bikers then assumed they were boyfriend and girlfriend (cheering them on with "C'mon, hug! Kiss! Hug!", but the fact was that Suzuna and Sena weren't in a relationship. She eventually finds her brother and beats the living daylights out of him for taking the family savings to fly to America. She also witnesses Sena in action as Eyeshield 21. Later, she follows the team back to Japan after her brother accepts Sena's offer to join the Devil Bats (he didn't get picked for the American football team he was trying to enter). She then becomes a cheerleader for the Devil Bats even though she's not from Deimon High School (and the captain for the otherwise all-American cheerleading team). Now, the club has a second female member in the group. Suzuna is built like that of a young girl, and is often teased mercilessly by others because of that. She appears to have feelings for Sena. One thing to note is that she does not like to be addressed by her last name or be called Miss, (in Japanese, using the term 'san').

In the anime, Suzuna was introduced early in the series as a part-time reporter, who was hired by the magazine, American Football Monthly's manager to discover Eyeshield 21's identity. Her reason was to find her long-lost brother, whom she suspected was Eyeshield 21. However, she later realized that Eyeshield 21 was not her brother, (who was far taller), and left for America due to a tip from Hiruma. She then later meets up with the Devil Bats during their Death March training. She even came up with the Devil Bats cheer:

GO! GO! LET'S GO!

GO! GO! DEVIL!

FLY! FLY! BATS!

RUN! RUN! BATS!

COME ON! COME ON! 21!

EYESHIELD 21! 21!

COME ON OUT, EYESHIELD 21!
  • Character Info:

  • #Position: Cheerleading Captain

#1st year student (Grade 10)
#The first time Sena and Monta saw her in her cheerleading outfit, they were shocked as if they had just seen a ghost.
#She even made a special cheerleading outfit for Mamori and Monta was extremely happy to see it (he had a massive nosebleed there and then).
#Hiruma managed to get American cheerleaders for the team mostly via threatening them (two of the cheerleaders appear to look distinctively like the two American girls who were featured in an episode in the anime).
#In the 100th chapter (a whole chapter consisting of cute 4-column panel omake), Suzuna got Mamori to wear the Eyeshield 21 clothes. As she puts the visored helmet onto a resisting Mamori's head, that is when Monta suddenly walks in, believing that was Sena with Suzuna, and from the angle he was standing it looked like they were kissing.

Natsuhiko Taki

(瀧 夏彦 ''Taki Natsuhiko'') A man with an odd and rather foolish attitude, and is apparently quite oblivious to the silliness of his actions. He was first introduced in the series when Sena met him in the San Antonio stadium (Natsuhiko was trying out for the team there). He has a habit of opening his jacket to bare his pecs, making weird poses like rising up his leg 180 degrees and is often portrayed as a ladies-man. His dream is to become a pro football star, even though he didn't know squat about the rules, nor the positions, stating that he was an all-around super player. He couldn't play American Football in Japan; he wasn't qualified, so he went to America to apply for a position in the San Antonio Team by taking all the savings in his house to fly to America. He failed; however, the coach did praise him on his potential and asked him to try out again after gaining some experience in high school football. His body's flexibilty is comparable to Monta's. Sena passed the pro-tryouts as Eyeshield 21, (though he and the Taki siblings left before his name was announced). Sena, feeling a little sorry for the poor guy, sensed that Natsuhiko had potential and that his talent shouldn't be wasted, asked him to join the Devil Bats back in Japan as a Tight End . He manages to qualify as a Devil Bats team member after undergoing the rest of the Death March. Although he's quite the clueless, narcissistic fool, he is undeniably a very good (not to mention useful) player in the team. His personality is noted to be gentlemanly, but he's still an idiotic, competative showoff.

#Monta harbors an intense dislike towards Natsuhiko; in junior high, while Monta was taking an entrance exam, Natsuhiko approached Monta and asked him whether a book he found earlier, Son Son (with a picture of a chimpanzee on it) was Monta's, since he thought that Monta looked like a chimp.
#He's an idiot when it comes to directions. Before the match against the Amino Cyborgs, he made Sena and himself take the wrong bus to Nagoya; however, thanks to Hiruma and the Zokugaku Chameleons, Sena eventually got back to play in the match in time. But then, Natsuhiko got lost (again) by taking the wrong train back. In the end he missed the game.
#He is also an idiot when it comes to academics. He admitted that he only knew up to the 6 times tables. However, if he associates the questions with football, then he can learn. That was how the Devil Bats were able to help him cram for the entrance exam. Hiruma was about to threaten the examiner in Deimon to make Natsuhiko pass, but the examiner concluded that he passed, (barely) and was eligible to enroll in Deimon High School.

Gen "Musashi" Takekura, aka The 60-yard Magnum

The place kicker for the Devil Bats and one of the original three members of the team, along with Hiruma and Kurita. Is often mistaken for an older person, since he does look much older than the rest of the Devil Bats, at least until he grows out his hair and shaves. He leaves the team prior to Sena's arrival for reasons unknown, but after meeting with Sena and Monta and seeing how determined they are to get him back on the team, he agrees, but only if they become a strong team. Has a running rivalry with the kicker of the Bando Spiders, who's claimed he's NEVER missed. Musashi has an incredible strong leg which helps the Devil Bats on kickoffs, often pinning their opponents deep or forcing them to down the ball in the end zone. The title of the 60-yard Magnum was actually a lie fabricated by Hiruma, in order to make Musashi seem invincible, and Takekura keeps telling people that it is a lie. However, the kicker of the Bando Spiders STILL wants to prove that he's better than the Deimon player.

OJO WHITE KNIGHTS

(王城ホワイトナイツ)

Seijuro Shin

(進 清十郎 ''Shin Seijūrō'') The star Linebacker of the Ojo White Knights American football team and Sena Kobayakawa's main rival. Shin is a silent, seemingly unsociable person. Despite this, his friends include his teammates Haruto Sakuraba and Makoto Otawara. After the Ojo's coach, Shoji Gunpei noticed his talent when he first tried out for the Oujou American football team with Sakuraba, he told the seniors to make sure Shin never gets recruited by any other club than the American football club. Shin is the fastest and strongest linebacker in the whole of Japan. His tackle is called the "Spear Tackle", one with a long and powerful reach. He is one of the few characters who guessed that Sena was Eyeshield 21 right away. After figuring out Sena's secret identity, he tells him he'll be waiting for him in the finals. He does consider Eyeshield 21 as a formidable opponent due to the fact that Sena is able to achieve the legendary Speed of Light pace (40 yards in 4.2 seconds), and was the one person who actually beat him and his Spear Tackle outright with pure speed (no cuts-moves, etc.). It was through this experience that drives Shin to improve on his running as well as his strength. Shin resembles Kenshiro from Fist Of The North Star , which is used humorously in the manga to show Sena's fear of Shin (as a dellusion - it's suggested that "Dellusion Shin" can probably use "Hokuto-shinken" as well). During the summer before the Fall Kantou Tournament, he trains at Mt. Fuji to perfect the 'Ballista' technique. He is always serious when it comes to his training, but is at an absolute loss when it comes to technology. He will break any kind of device within one minute of being handed one, since he has no idea of how the device works. So far, he's broken a camcorder, a GPS device and later on, a laptop. In one of the Jump advertisments for a Gameboy DS game, Shin manages to break the DS he was playing with.

Haruto Sakuraba

Pretty much your typical, good-looking pop idol (despite the fact that he can't sing, though he does have a CD single, go figure), he works in an advertising company called Jari Productions. When he was young, he used to watch sports all the time and dreamed of becoming a professional athlete. Later on in high school, he manages to enter the team as a Wide Receiver after drawing much attention from the seniors due to his height; however, the coach, Shogun, was more interested in Shin back then. Shin soon surpassed him, becoming the ace of the team. Sakuraba felt a little envious of Shin's success and achievements, and was disappointed with himself for not being able to soar to greater heights. He eventually became less interested in training and sports in general. One day, Miracle Ito of Jari Productions noticed him; his good looks, his height, and his general demeanor was perfect for a model. Feeling wanted and pleased to be in the light for once, Sakaruba agreed to work for him. Now, he's constantly misunderstood; because of his popularity, people mistake him for the genius of the Ojo team, and not the true ace Shin. In fact, his football skills were mediocre at best, especially with his catching ability. Sakuraba is always feeling a lot of pressure on himself to do well, to live up to the lies and assumptions people make and associate with him. An accident in the Ojo vs. Deimon game changed it all, though; Sena accidentally tackled him while running as Eyeshield 21, injuring him. In the hospital, after meeting Sena, Monta and his die-hard fan Torakichi who admires Sakuraba for his catch in the game against Deimon the year before, he finally decides to stop being pessimistic and to succeed just as Shin has done. Just before the Fall tournament started, he decided to quit working with Jari Productions and focus on American football with the help of his friends after he heard Takami complimenting him and how he had waited for a friend like Sakuraba, someone like him who understood his predicaments. So, before the opening ceremony, he cut his hair in a crew-cut style to show his renewed vigor in pursuing success in American football. Now, his skills as a Receiver have rapidly improved; Sakuraba can now be considered a real ace, and is still working at improving himself. One of his biggest inspirations are Unsui Kongo, who constantly strives to be Better than his brother Agon, who has near-supernatural football talents that comes from no hard work, whereas Unsui works hard to become great (just as Sakuraba has done now)

  • The teams once nearly made a total loss to Sankaku Punks by 6-7, but thanks to Sakuraba's improved receiving skills, they managed to defeat them 82-0 in the Fall tournament.

  • Sakaurba's height plays to his advantage as a receiver, especially since Ojo's quarterback Ichiro is also tall. Even if the opposing team knows where the pass is going to, they can barely do anything about it, since the pass is almost too high to intercept. During the fall game against the Sankaku Punks, this pass combination is called the Everest Pass.

Ichiro Takami

As he enters this school, he enters Ojo White Knights and his dream is to become a Quarterback, but because of his wound on his leg when he was young, he runs slower than Otawara. After the coach tells him the truth, he decides to take on more training and calculations of passing to the player. Finally, after his fourth year in the team, he officially became the team's quarterback for the Kanto Tournament. He is very analytical and has some ability in reading the movements and strategies of the opposing team. His passes are done with precision and accuracy, though they aren't on the same level as Hiruma's.

Makoto Otawara

A VERY large lineman for the White Knights, with a huge frame, muscles, and ego. Otawara is a very loud and brash person, who always says what's on his mind, in spite of the fact there's not much up there to begin with. He also has a flatulence problem (he farts a lot) and he makes no effort to hide it. As the White Knights' coach puts it, Otawara is plain stupid, but that is also his strength, since his overall power and simplistic way of doing things makes him perfect for the line, both on offense and defense. When he's really motivated, he could rip apart two opposing rookies. In spite of how crude he can be, he's a nice guy at heart, he is the epitome of the dumb jock. Always competing with Kurita, Otawara usually ends up on the short end of the stick, thanks to Kurita's drive.

Ikari Daigo

A silver-haired freshman on the White Knights team, plays mostly on the defensive line with Otawara. Ikari is kept chained up because he's a complete NUTCASE. He has absolutely no respect toward the graduated 'Golden Generation' members, since he never played with them. Managed to get himself ejected from his first game against the Sankaku Punks by attacking their coach, who had just insulted Sakuraba.

SEIBU WILD GUNMANS

  • Logo: A cactus wearing a cowboy suit

  • This is one bizarre team, but the second best team in the Spring Kantou Tournament. Their captain's an old Japanese dude who acts like a real cowboy, the cheerleaders are Japanese girls who wear sexy cowgirl dress (even real guns). The most active team ever seen in Eyeshield 21 manga. During spring break, they train in Houston, Texas. Once Tetsuma, Kid and their coach team up with Sena, Mamori, and Monta to become Devil Gunmen in a beach football tournament, as the Seibu coach didn't want the prize, a bull, to be eaten by anyone. He also wanted it for their ranch.

The Kid

"The Kid" is a nickname. His real name is "Shien", which Hiruma mentions after Deimon High School’s sports day. He is a quarterback like Hiruma, and also possesses great aim. Kid and Tetsuma make up one of the strongest quarterback-wide receiver combinations in Japan (by high school standards), like the legendary Joe Montana-Jerry Rice combination, although to a lesser extent. Kid specializes in quick-draw shooting, where he throws the ball as soon as he receives it from the center to Tetsuma, Seibu's wide receiver. His personality is very laid-back. However, whenever he gets the feeling that things go too well, he always predicts that something bad will happen, (which usually does, such as when they were ahead of the Ojo White Knights during the first half, then Tetsuma drank too much water). His quote is "Something bad has to happen after something so good."
:Position: Quarterback
:Jersey: 7
:A great sharpshooter like Hiruma, he's half-American and half-Japanese. The name 'Kid' is derived from the name of a famous cowboy, Billy The Kid .
:In America, he once teamed up with Hiruma in the beach football match and used a special technique named Super Quarterback Tag. Their tosses were so fast, everyone assumed that they were using the Too Tattoos' Dancing Flea technique.

Jo Tetsuma

A fast and quiet guy, he's like a robot who follows every order from the coach and Kid. However, he has a habit of following orders to the letter, and that can lead to disaster. It is very important to give him SPECIFIC instructions and to watch him carefully. Otherwise, he will follow any general directions to the extreme. For example, the coach once tells the players not to eat too much, so he doesn't eat for three days. Another time, was when the Kid told him to wake him up after 3 hours while riding on a bus. When the Kid got off the bus earlier, Tetsuma still waited 3 hours, then burst out of the back window of the bus to go look for Kid so he could wake him up!

Whenever Kid gives calls a pass route, he dashes and uses it as followed, no questions asked. This makes him perfect for his position as a Wide Receiver, since the Kid doesn't even have to look for him in order to pass.

#Position: Wide receiver
#Jersey: 15
#40-yard-dash: 5.0 seconds

#Fast and strong but dumb.
:His name also means Iron Horse. In America they use this nickname for the steam-engine train in the old west. This of course, gives meaning to the pass routes he is ordered to follow, which likens him to a train that cannot be altered from the track it runs. He will bowl over anyone who gets in the way on the tracks. In the game against Deimon however, Monta does manage to upset his route and cause him to fumble, thereby showing that even the best laid path can be disrupted or 'derailed.'
:In one match, he's the cause of a huge lead 20-7. But because he drank too much water during half-time, he cannot continue as he has to go to the toilet the entire time, causing his team to lose 20-21.

Riku

An extremely fast gray-haired boy and happens to be the one who taught Sena how to run. When Riku was in elementary school, he saw Sena being bullied and he used his speed to save him. After that Riku taught Sena that if he could run fast, he would never be bullied again. Sadly, Sena used his speed to be a gopher, (though it's ironic that being a gopher is what helped build up his speed). Riku soon left Sena's school because his family needed to move, but he and Sena met again in chapter 127.
#Position: Runningback/Safety
#Jersey: 29
:Just as fast as Sena (what did you expect?), but was beaten by him when Sena used his Devil bat Tornado.

SHINRYUJI NAGAS

  • Logo: Dragon

  • The strongest team in the Tokyo area. Not much is known about their skills but they have a player with natural talent at football. The majority of the team's linemen are monks. Three of them represent the main characters from Journey To The West (or as they call it, Saiyuki ).

Unsui Kongo

A very strong player. Nothing much is known about him, but in the previous year's match between the Ojo White Knights and Shinryuji Nagas, both he and his brother (as first-year players) were sent out with 5 minutes to play and Ojo holding a 16-3 lead. Their entrance resulted in a 17-16 victory for Shinryuji. Far more serious and intense than Agon, Unsui is much better liked, as opposed to feared like his brother is.
  • Position: Quarterback

  • Jersey: 12

  • Second-Year Student (11th Grade)

Agon Kongo

The twin brother of Unsui, but completely the opposite in personality. He is lazy, comes late to the match, yet he has more friends than Unsui does. Kumabukuro, the reporter, says that he is a tremendous talent who is only seen once every 100 years. Even the coach, who looks like an old monk, wants everybody in the team not to act as his character and tells them that only Agon can act in this manner. This is because Agon's natural talent is near-superhuman, and allows him to do whatever he wants. This has made him arrogant and over-confident in his ability. This is in contrast to Unsui whose skill comes from hard work. So far, he only shows his agility to Sena and makes a powerful throw at Torakichi, who teases their team but luckily is saved by Sakuraba, Monta and Sena. Later on, he is shown to have a history with Hiruma, and his laid-back cool attitude becomes somewhat rattled whenever Deimon's quarterback is involved. Agon's arrogance in his own natural talents cause him to look down on those he feels are less talented (basically everyone else), however, Hiruma is aware of this and plans on using it to undo Agon.

When Sena first met Agon, he was attempting to hook up with (or possibly rape) Mamori. Sena rushed in to save her, only for Agon to dodge behind him in an instant. After Agon left, Sena said that he sensed a feeling of "pure evil".

Ikkyu Hosakawa

The only person who has an attitude like Monta (but doesn't eat bananas like Monta does). By the look of him, no one should be intimidated, but his true skill lies in his running technique. He has the record of 4.9 seconds in the 40-yard-dash ''while running backwards'', making him the best cornerback in the Kanto Zone. Ikkyu is also proud of his jumping and catching ability. He tells Unsui that no one can beat him on air. However, Kanto's best cornerback is nothing compared to Japan's best linebacker. Shin proves this to him in his first match against him. Always bullied by his teammates as he gets more remarks than they do. Ikkyu is one of the nicer, more friendly players on the team, but that doesn't make him any less serious when game time comes.

OTHER TEAMS

KYOSHIN POSEIDON

  • Logo: The Greek water god holding a trident

  • Unexpectedly, this team manage to defeat the strong Hashiratani Deer in their first match by gaining 31 points without letting Hashintari Deer get anymore points after sending out their team's secret weapon. Defeats Zokuto Gakuen Chameleon in their second match and lost to Deimon Devil Bats by one point. Two players to take note of are:

  • Mizumachi Kengo

The third tallest player on the team and a natural athlete. Was on the swimming team but quit due to the lack of challenge. Plays on the line and uses his height and speed from a "swimmer's start" to great advantage. He has a bad habit of saying inappropriate and insensitive remarks. Initally, he looks down (no pun intended) on Komusubi of the Deimon team due to how short he is, but learns there is a lot of strength in Komusubi's small frame. Jersey Number: 71

Shun Kakei

The second tallest player on the team and the de facto captain. Went to school in America for a year and met the real Eyeshield 21. Claims that Sena is a fake and will defeat him. He was able to stop Sena's Devil Bat Ghost, however his one-handed block is defeated by the Devil Bat Tornado.

TAIYO SPHINX

  • Logo: Sphinx

  • This strong team is one of the best in the Tokyo Area. The entire team is made up of idiots except for Banba. Their players act like Egyptians because their headmaster, after excavating a ruin, became obsessed with the Egyptians and opened a school that looks like a pyramid. Their specialty move is the Pyramid Line. The Pyramid Line involves the linemen going into a V-shaped "pyramid" formation. Their game against Deimon ends in a tie (20-20), but Banba surrenders the chance to play against the Nasa Aliens to his opponents after they had shown his team the true spirit and drive to win, despite the difference in power, size, and especially climate. One thing to note is that all of the students look somewhat Egyptian (their skin is dark). This is explained in the anime in a snippet: all the students are into surfing since Shonan beach is right next door. Hence, the tans. The four players to take note of are:

Banba Mamoru

Massive center of the team. The team captain and powerhouse of the team. He holds the high school record for the squat. Although he is more skillful than Kurita, he does not have as much raw strength as Kurita. Jersey: 50. Due to his harsh training for the Fall Tournament, Banba's face is scarred up.

Harao

The whining quarterback. He bosses everyone around and puts the blame on them until in Volume 6, Banba sets him straight. For some reason, he's popular with the ladies and has his own Harem . He acts like a pharaoh. However, compared to Hiruma, his skills as a quarterback are substantially less. His over-dependence on the Pyramid Line has made him slower and less able to avoid sacks. He also tends to hold the ball too high when passing, which can lead to fumbles when he's tackled. Jersey: 8.

Kasamatsu

The second-largest lineman on the pyramid line. He talks too much and is always getting the blame from Harao and apologizing to him. He starts picking on the Hah Brothers, but is beaten by Jumonji twice, first with the Juvenile Delinquent Murder Method, then with just a normal block. He's not very bright and is easily fooled by trick plays and trap blocks. Jersey: 66.

Kamaguruma Ken

Kamaguruma is a large first-year who plays cornerback. He's a bit dim-witted, but is a pretty good player. He gives Monta some trouble when he comes in during the second-half of the Taiyo game. He is "The Chariot" for Taiyo. His moves include "Chariot Bump" and "Chariot Attack". However, Monta's catching ability far outstripped his skills, especially when he caught a long pass while rolling! Jersey: 98.

ZOKUGAKU CHAMELEONS

  • Logo: Chameleon

  • This entire team consists of gang members. Their leader, Habashiri Rui, accepts a challenge from Deimon where 5 million yen goes to the victor of their match. His team was disqualified from the Spring tournament when he and some other players beat up the referee. The game against the Devil Bats ends in a 28-48 loss for them. When Deimon defeats Zokugaku, the team believes that Hiruma was joking about the money, but are forced to become his slaves to pay off their debt to him. Otherwise, Hiruma would have confiscated their motorcycles, broke them apart, and sold the parts for money. They help the Hah Brothers to train and learn a new technique called "rascal killing" (sometimes known as "delinquent deathblow" or "scumbag scuffle"). In the English manga, it's called "The Juvenile Deliquent Murder Method". The team was later released from their debt when the Devil Bats went to America. Hiruma wanted them to train for the Fall Tournament.

  • Habashira Rui, the leader of the Zokugaku team. Basically, he's is a punk's punk, leading his team like it was a street gang (which in fact it is). Not long on skill, Habashira's long arms make him a good linebacker, because he can intercept passes and stop runs, though he's not on the same level as Shin. Habashira's trash-talking of Shin is what motivates Sena in their game. However, he does show a more serious side, after his team is defeated by the Kyoshin Poseidon team. Hiruma noted that only Habashiri tried his hardest to win. At this point, the Zokugaku linebacker begged Hiruma to tell him why, when the two of them were so much alike, his team lost while the Devil Bats fought on. Jersey number 42, position (Inside?) Linebacker.

  • Tsuyumine Megu, the team's manager/trainer. She is a rough and no-nonsense woman who carries a shredded, wooden practice sword and is not above torturing the team members in order for them to train harder (she and Hiruma would probably get along). Some of her known tactics is towing the players behind her motorcycle, and hitting them between the legs with her sword. She rules the team with an iron fist and even Habashira's afraid of her.

KOIGAHAMA CUPIDS

  • Logo: Cupid

  • This is a very weak team that is well known for all of their team members having girlfriends and bringing them to the games, (which aren't very many, since they usually lose and get eliminated within the first or second matches). The quarterback has an annoying habit of teasing the opposing side, by stating that his team has at least ten girls cheering for them, while suggesting that his opponents come from an all-boys school. It was against this team that Eyeshield 21 made his debut by scoring a comeback touchdown victory. The team's quarterback's girlfriend is so dumb, that she STILL thinks that her boyfriend is a rugby player, even though he has repeatedly told her that it's American Football. Eventually he just gave up. The Cupids set the worst record in the Kanto Tournament, losing to the Seibu Wild Gunmans (10-125). As a result, they surrendered during the 3rd quarter and never finished the game.

NASA ALIENS/NASA SHUTTLES

  • Logo: Alien

  • This is the American team that Deimon plays when they represent Japan. The whole team is white, because their coach, Apollo, is biased. The best player on the team, Panther, only picks up balls and is not allowed to play because of his previous mistake in a game and not following through with the coach's instructions, although it was later found out that this was merely a rationalization. The coach had lost his big chance due to the acceptance of a natural sprinter that his team aqcuired back during his football days and despised natural sprinters such as Panther and people who have natural abilities ever since. His goal was creating a team that relied purely on strategy, regardless of each team member's talent showing that talent really isn't everything. However, the entire team respects Panther because of his friendliness and skill. The match with the Devil Bats is also Panther's first chance to play in a long time, probably after the blunder when he disobeyed the coach's strategy, and that caused Panther to be tackled. One of the drawbacks to Apollo's strategies was that he mostly relied on his quarterback's ability to throw long passes, (the Shuttle Pass). The Devil Bats soon found a way to neutralize it and with Eyeshield 21's speed and Hiruma's tactics, Apollo was forced to let Panther play. There was a bet before the game and the terms were that if a team didn't win more than 10 points (goes for both Deimon and NASA), then that team would stay in the opposite country (Japan for NASA, US for Deimon). Deimon lost by one point (32-33), but only because they lacked a kicker and Sena was too exhausted to try the Devil Bat Dive at the end. Neither team succeeded in one-upping each other by 10 points. So Deimon went to America, while NASA stayed. In actuality, this was all according to Hiruma's plans since he wanted the Devil Bats to gain more experience against a veteran team and get some training in the United States. The American coach changes the team name to Nasa Shuttles, which is a cheap loophole that cuts the deal short. Apollo will let Panther play in the new team.

#Panther's specialty is called the Zero-Gravity Run, which allows him to run at great speeds with extremely light footsteps. Unlike Sena's method of sharp turns and cuts, Panther can run like water, using the minimal amount of movement to slide around obstacles. He also uses one hand to hold onto the ball, while the other is extended to ward off opposing blockers. Naturally, this gives his opponent a chance to slap the ball away, causing a fumble. Sena and Shin both show this flaw to him, and this teaches Panther that he needs to get more practice against opposing players. Jersey Number: 20
#The signature move of the Nasa Aliens is called the Shuttle Pass, which is an extremely long pass. Hormer Fitzgerald is the quarterback that uses a countdown to launch the ball across the field, while his wide receiver Watt calculates the ball's landing point like Mission Control. The problem with this tactic is that it requires a longer time to initiate the pass, which leaves the quarterback open to blitzes that result in sacks. The Muscle Barrier, the name given to the line, is crucial in ensuring the line's success.
#The more muscular members of the Nasa Aliens have a habit of getting into a group pose and flexing their muscles, in which they believe show off their physiques to all female spectators, thereby getting them dates and such. So far, it hasn't worked.

In the anime, the coach's main motivation for excluding Panther is really jealousy. In his days as an NFL player, Apollo, despite his considerable efforts, was never more than a benchwarmer. When it looked like he would finally play, the bigwigs of his team hired Morgan, an extremely talented sprinter and, yes, an African American, much like Panther. He was cut from the team, and the flashback he had during the Deimon game showed him asking for one more chance, but being denied another chance. Bitter about it all, Apollo went on to found an ideal high school team that relied solely in perfectly executed and superior strategies without leaning on the performance of talented aces. Also, whenever any one of the team members of the Nasa Aliens made a mistake, he would immediately be substituted. Despite being left out from the team ever since a mistake until the Deimon game, he had always looked up to Apollo, as he was hard-working. When Apollo's strategies during the Deimon game crumbled in front of Hiruma's tricks and Eyeshield's speed, Apollo relunctantly allowed Panther to play. Afterwards, Panther became ecstatic when Apollo told him that there would be a number 20 uniform for the Running Back (Panther) of the new NASA Shuttles team (#20 was Apollo's uniform number during his NFL days with the San Francisco Armadillos).

AMINO CYBORGS

  • Logo: Cyborg

  • Team members look like doctors but are very strong and the only school using modern technology to grow stronger. They have a firm belief that victory can only be achieved through medical science, rather than spirit and determination. They're known as the Tournament Breakers, since they always choose one sport every year to enter, and win the championship of that sport. Previously, it was soccer and basketball. The cheerleaders wear nurses' uniforms. The Cyborgs make their first entry in the Autumn Kantou Tournament, where they faced the Devil Bats in Round One. However they failed to defeat Deimon, (8-38), even after Linebacker Munakata proclaims that he can defeat Eyeshield 21. He had spent the summer, practicing against Eyeshield's previous running tactics, not knowing about Sena's Death March Training and the Devilbat Ghost. Not only that, but Deimon's line crushes Amino's line after a reminder from Doburoku, despite a bad start. The team suffers a nervous breakdown as his belief in medical science is shattered. The rest of the game was an easy win for the Devil Bats. Even though the sports medical science did make the Amino players stronger, they lacked the stamina to keep up with Deimon. Compared to the intensive Death March training, the whole Amino team, including the offensive and defensive players were panting while Deimon, who use the same players for offense and defense, weren't even tired.
