The Explorer-class starship is an exploratory Starship of the Earth Alliance in the Fictional Universe of Babylon 5 . The Explorer is built to explore, do research, and build Jump Gate s. At 6.1 kilometers in length it is the largest craft in the EarthForce Navy . Dialogue in "A Distant Star" implies that ''Explorer''s are very rare, and that the officers and crews who operate them are among EarthForce's elite. PURPOSE They perform many roles like exploring new Star System s in short periods of time. They are equipped to do scientific research. Also because they explore beyond Earth Alliance territory they make first contact with many alien races they encounter. But their primary role is to build jump-gates in 'interesting' systems. DESIGN The Explorer class starship is a large starship with a length of 6.1 Kilometer s. Explorers are outfitted with the most advanced Sensor and Communication Technology the Earth Alliance has to offer. The advanced technology allows Explorer-class vessels to explore star systems in a few weeks or make first contact with new Extraterrestrial Species . The bulk of the ship consists of the components which it uses to make jump-gates. Because the Explorers were built for Construction and exploration purposes, they have very few defenses for a ship its size. Explorer-class vessels have 4 pulse Cannon s, 4 Particle Beam arrays, and two Squadron s of Starfuries. Yet it makes up for this deficiency by being able to jump to hyperspace on its own by using energy from its powerful Fusion Reactor s. SPECIFICATIONS
