Named for the first physicist to create a nuclear reactor, the Enrico Fermi Nuclear Power Plant is located between Detroit, Michigan and Toledo, Ohio near the community of Newport . The 94MWe prototype Fast Breeder Reactor Fermi 1 unit operated at the site from 1963 to 1972 and is now in the process of decommission. On October 5 , 1966 Fermi-1 suffered a partial Nuclear Meltdown (see the discussion in List Of Nuclear Accidents ). No radiation was released off-site, and no one was injured. Fermi 2 is a General Electric Boiling Water Reactor operated by the Detroit Edison Company and owned by DTE Energy. EXTERNAL LINKS |
