GEOGRAPHY Elon is located at 36°5'50" North, 79°30'44" West (36.097135, -79.512102). According to the United States Census Bureau , the town has a total area of 8.8 Km&2 (3.4 Mi&2 ). 8.8 km&2 (3.4 mi&2) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water. DEMOGRAPHICS As of the Census of 2000, there were 6,738 people, 1,903 households, and 1,141 families residing in the town. The Population Density was 769.7/km&2 (1,991.7/mi&2). There were 2,004 housing units at an average density of 228.9/km&2 (592.4/mi&2). The racial makeup of the town was 87.61% White , 10.24% African American , 0.04% Native American , 1.02% Asian , 0.03% Pacific Islander , 0.49% from Other Races , and 0.56% from two or more races. 1.59% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. There were 903 households out of which 26.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.6% were Married Couples living together, 6.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 40.0% were non-families. 22.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 2.94. In the town the population was spread out with 14.7% under the age of 18, 42.7% from 18 to 24, 15.2% from 25 to 44, 13.8% from 45 to 64, and 13.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 22 years. For every 100 females there were 80.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 76.6 males. The median income for a household in the town was $41,049, and the median income for a family was $64,091. Males had a median income of $45,536 versus $30,127 for females. The Per Capita Income for the town was $16,805. 20.9% of the population and 3.9% of families were below the Poverty Line . 6.5% of those under the age of 18 and 9.9% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line. EDUCATION Local public schools in Elon, NC include Western Alamance High School , Western Middle School , Altamahaw-Ossipee Elementary School , and Elon Elementary . The local school system is known as the Alamance-Burlington School System , which was created by a merger between the Alamance County School System and the Burlington City School System in 1996.
