GEOGRAPHY Ellerbe is located at 35°4'20" North, 79°45'42" West (35.072129, -79.761796). According to the United States Census Bureau , the town has a total area of 3.8 Km&2 (1.5 Mi&2 ). 3.8 km&2 (1.5 mi&2) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water. DEMOGRAPHICS As of the Census of 2000, there were 1,021 people, 398 households, and 269 families residing in the town. The Population Density was 268.2/km&2 (696.9/mi&2). There were 447 housing units at an average density of 117.4/km&2 (305.1/mi&2). The racial makeup of the town was 48.68% White , 46.13% African American , 0.20% Native American , 0.10% Asian , 0.00% Pacific Islander , 4.90% from Other Races , and 0.00% from two or more races. 8.42% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. There were 398 households out of which 32.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 37.9% were Married Couples living together, 25.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.4% were non-families. 29.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.55 and the average family size was 3.16. In the town the population was spread out with 30.7% under the age of 18, 7.8% from 18 to 24, 26.2% from 25 to 44, 19.8% from 45 to 64, and 15.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females there were 82.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 74.8 males. The median income for a household in the town was $21,118, and the median income for a family was $29,091. Males had a median income of $25,625 versus $16,544 for females.
