Elk Township is a Township located in Gloucester County , New Jersey . As of the United States 2000 Census , the township had a total population of 3,514. GEOGRAPHY According to the United States Census Bureau , the township has a total area of 51.0 Km&2 (19.7 Mi&2 ). 50.8 km&2 (19.6 mi&2) of it is land and 0.2 km&2 (0.1 mi&2) of it is water. The total area is 0.41% water. Elk Township borders South Harrison Township , Harrison Township , Glassboro , Clayton , and Franklin Township . Elk Township also borders Salem County . DEMOGRAPHICS As of the Census 2 of 2000, there were 3,514 people, 1,263 households, and 958 families residing in the township. The Population Density was 69.1/km&2 (179.0/mi&2). There were 1,347 housing units at an average density of 26.5/km&2 (68.6/mi&2). The racial makeup of the township was 82.07% White , 14.26% African American , 0.57% Native American , 0.43% Asian , 0.00% Pacific Islander , 1.37% from Other Races , and 1.31% from two or more races. 2.93% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. There were 1,263 households out of which 33.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.9% were Married Couples living together, 11.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 24.1% were non-families. 19.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.74 and the average family size was 3.16. In the township the population was spread out with 27.2% under the age of 18, 6.9% from 18 to 24, 28.4% from 25 to 44, 24.9% from 45 to 64, and 12.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 96.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.6 males. The median income for a household in the township was $51,047, and the median income for a family was $55,472. Males had a median income of $41,604 versus $27,407 for females. The Per Capita Income for the township was $18,621. 8.5% of the population and 8.3% of families were below the Poverty Line . 6.4% of those under the age of 18 and 15.7% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line. GOVERNMENT Local government The official structure of Elk Township consists of a five-member Township Committee. The members of the Elk Township Committee are Mayor Ms. Terry L. Ratzell, Deputy Mayor Mr. Samual Ragonese, Mr. Victor Morella, Mr. William Rainey and Mr. Richard Schmidt. Federal, state and county representation Elk Township is in the Second Congressional District and is part of New Jersey's 3rd Legislative District. EDUCATION Approximately 400 students from Preschool to Sixth Grade attend Aura School as part of the Elk Township School District. Aura Elementary School was built in 1927, with the newest addition built in 2002. For grades 7-12, students attend the Delsea Regional School District , which serves students from both Elk Township and Franklin Township . Schools in the district are Delsea Regional Middle School for grades 7 and 8, and Delsea Regional High School for grades 9-12. EXTERNAL LINKS
