She was born in Connecticut where she attended Miss Porter's School . Her family moved to Cape Breton , Nova Scotia ,in 1972 . Once in Cape Breton, Her family suffered a reversal of fortune and May waited on tables for eleven years to put herself through university. After graduating from Dalhousie Law School , she worked as an advisor to Tom McMillan while he was Brian Mulroney 's Environment Minister but she then resigned after exposing the government's plan to grant illegal permits for the Rafferty and Alameda Dam s in Saskatchewan . In 2001 , May went on a fourteen day Hunger Strike to protest the government's failure to clean up the Sydney Tar Ponds in Nova Scotia . May is a member of the Board of the International Institute Of Sustainable Development and is former vice-chair of the National Round Table On The Environment And The Economy . In 1999, Dalhousie University created a permanent chair in her honour, the Elizabeth May Chair in Women’s Health & the Environment. She has received numerous rewards, including the United Nations Global 500 award, two honourary doctorates and the 2002 Harkin Award from the Canadian Parks And Wilderness Society . She is the author of four books. She has the , who attended the Montreal Conference in 2005 at her reqeust, among her contacts. In 2005 Elizabeth May was appointed as an Officer to the Order Of Canada . May resigned as the Sierra Club's executive director in April 2006, to step down in June 2006. She is reported to be considering a run in the Green Party Of Canada 's Leadership Election {Link without Title} . PERSONAL May has one daughter, Victoria-Cate, born in 1991. Victoria-Cate currently attends the Literary Arts Program at Canterbury High School in Ottawa . They currently live in the community of New Edinburgh , in Ottawa . May and her daughter are mentors to a girl in Lesotho , with the assistance of Help Lesotho . Elizabeth May is co chair of the St. Mary's Project, associated with St. Bartholomew's Anglican Church , which supports 17 orphaned girls to complete their education in Lesotho .
