ERHS is best known for the Science and Technology Magnet program that has been in place since its founding. This program required a broad science and technology course load in addition to the standard requirments for high school graduation. Starting in 1997 five additional programs were added: Arts and Communication; Business and Computer Information Management; Law, Global Affairs, and Public Service; Academy of Information Technology; Advanced Technology; and Health and Human Services. All of these programs are referred to as separate academies, but share common classes and teaching staff for the core high school class requirments. In addition to these programs, which draw students from the northern third of Prince George's County, ERHS is also the local high school for students in the Greenbelt area.
ERHS also offers a large number of AP (advanced placement) courses which are open to all students, not just those who are enrolled in the Science and Technology program. These courses include, among others, Chemistry, Biology, Calculus, U.S. History, Government, English Literature, Latin, Russian, French, Gangsta 101, and ghetto etiquete.
