Information About

Elbow River

The Elbow River is a river located in southern Alberta , Canada . It runs from Elbow Lake in the Elbow-Sheep Wildland area of Kananaskis Country in the Rocky Mountains to the city of Calgary where it merges with the Bow River . The Elbow River is popular among canoers, rafters, campers and hikers and runs through several parks including Allen Bill Pond, Forgetmenot Pond, and Elbow Falls .

The River then continues through the foothills still as a small river and flows into the town of Bragg Creek . The Elbow continues under Highway 22, although during the flood of June 2005 it was overtopping the highway, and then travels through the town of Elbow Springs directly west of Calgary.

Before reaching the Calgary city limits, the Elbow River runs through the Tsuu T'ina Nation 145 Indian Reserve . At the Weaselhead Flats , just inside the city of Calgary, the Elbow River flows into the Glenmore Reservoir , Calgary's chief source of drinking water. From there, it flows south of city center, past the Calgary Stampede grounds and finally joins the Bow River. Calgary's original Northwest Mounted Police settlement, Fort Calgary , was located where the Bow and Elbow rivers meet.

The water flow of the Elbow River fluctuates significantly. The Glenmore Dam helps mitigate the risk of Flood ing. However, a flood in June 2005 was so severe (the heaviest in at least two centuries according to Albertan Government estimates) that the water flowed over the dam. Approximately 2,000 Calgarians living downstream needed to be evacuated.
