THE "GATEWAY" SITUATION The population decrease can mostly be contributed to the town's underacheiving Gateway Shopping Center and movie theater. Today, only Subway, Grotto Pizza, a Chinese restaurant, Hallmark, and a music store still operate business and the movie theater, despite managing to hold through after the opening of the nearby, large 20-screen eminent Cinemark movie theater in the Scranton metropolitan area, has suffered major financial losses although it still plays a relatively substantial number of updated, actually new movies every week. The United Penn Plaza and another shopping center, both of which are expanded with a good number of stores have been recently completed in the town in an attempt to basically refurnish it. Edwardsville has become the subject of ridicule for many area residents that see the town as a major negative characteristic of Northeastern Pennsylvania . EXTERNAL LINKS |
