Sir Edmund Verney ( 1596 - 1642 ) was a casualty of the Battle Of Edgehill . Knighted by King James in 1611 , he accompanied King Charles I when he attempted to woo the Spanish Infanta in 1623 , but caused an incident by punching a priest in the face. This did not prevent his appointment as Knight-Marshal when Charles became King in 1625 . In 1642 he was appointed Royal Standard-bearer at Nottingham but two months later he was killed at Edgehill. Legend has it only his severed hand was found, still clutching the standard. EXTERNAL LINKS
