He was born in Cartmel, Lancashire , and educated at Kendal Grammar School and St John's College, Cambridge ; he received his M. A. in 1727.

He was Master of Peterhouse, Cambridge , 1756-68; vice-chancellor, 1755-6; librarian of the University Of Cambridge , 1760 and Knightsbridge Professor Of Moral Philosophy , 1764. He was Bishop Of Carlisle , 1768-87.

He was said to be a great personal influence on the intellectual development of Richard Watson , Bishop Of Landaff .
