East Croydon station is a railway station and tram stop in Croydon . The station is situated 9.3 miles (15 km) south of Charing Cross and is in Travelcard Zone 5 . It is one of three stations incorporating " Croydon " in their name. The other two stations are West Croydon Station to the west and South Croydon Station to the south. All three are located in the London Borough Of Croydon . In January of 2006, the London Assembly issued 2002/2003 statistics of crime in overground railway stations, East Croydon, Clapham Junction and Walthamstow Central being the worst in terms of total number of crimes. The rise of reported crimes was 12,260, with 83% of crimes against people aged 40 and under . ARCHITECTURE The new East Croydon station building was opened on 19 August 1992 . The building consists of a huge steel and glass frame suspended from a lightweight steel structure that straddles the track and platforms to a much greater extent than was possible with its Victorian predecessor. Four steel Ladder Mast s anchor the enormous glass box and the whole gives the impression of a suspension bridge that stretches into the distance. External Canopies cover the entrances and a café's open-air seating area, as well as the approaches to the tram station. 440 sq m of glass were used in the roof, and 800 sq m for the wall glazing. The architects were Alan Brookes Associates, the structural engineers YRM Anthony Hunt Associates. SERVICES The station is on, amongst others, the London - Gatwick Airport - Brighton line and the First Capital Connect route from Gatwick through London Bridge to Bedford , as well as the London Bridge - Uckfield branch was recently overhauled with new Class 171 DMUs All services (excluding Virgin Trains and the Uckfield branch) that serve this station are powered by 750 V DC Third Rail. The station is an interchange with the Croydon Tramlink system, the trams of which have a stopping point immediately outside the front, and with the local bus service. All three tram routes stop here in both directions, with services to Elmers End , Beckenham Junction , New Addington and Wimbledon . RENOVATION New plans have arisen in light of the new Croydon Gateway plans to renovate the overcrowded station. If plans for a 12,500 seat arena to open on the neglected site adjacent to East Croydon station come into effect, then a £24million reconstruction and expansion of the station will occur giving more entrances and an 'airport style' feel to the station concourse with a wider space for the thousands of travellers, commuters, shoppers and arena-goers. The improved station will have a pedestrian plaza at the site of the current station concourse and the new station building will feature lifts and escalators down to the platforms in addition to shops, bars and restaurants that fully integrate into the overall plans for expanded commerce in the area around the arena and other local destinations in the Fairfield area, earmarked to become Croydon's cultural quarter.
