Information About

Durham Region Transit

Durham Region Transit (DRT) is the regional transit operator in Durham Region , east of Toronto . It began operations on January 1 , 2006 , after approval was given by Durham Regional Council on February 9 , 2005 . It was formed as a merger of existing municipal transit systems in Pickering , Ajax , Whitby , Oshawa , and Clarington .

DRT is headquartered in Whitby, Ontario at the Durham Region headquarters.

OPERATIONS

DRT has initially continued the operations of its predecessor systems largely intact, and all prior routes and services continue to exist. Route maps and schedules are available at the DRT web site . Key routes include service to service Durham College and UOIT in Oshawa.

DRT is providing a new two-day-a week community bus service for the northern communities of Port Perry, Ontario and Uxbridge, Ontario , marking the first public transit service in these communities.

FARES

The following table shows DRT's fare structure as of January 1 , 2006 :

  • restricted student passes are only valid Monday to Friday, 6:30 am to 7:00 pm

DRT tickets, passes, and transfers are accepted on GO buses operating within Durham Region , allowing riders to freely transfer between DRT and GO buses to complete a trip within the region. Full details about this program are available at the DRT site . The following restrictions are of specific interest:

  • Riders wishing to pay cash fares for GO bus service will need to pay the regular GO fare for the applicable zones, not the DRT fare.

  • Trips on GO buses that start or terminate outside of Durham Region are charged the regular GO fare

  • Trips on GO trains are not affected by this program.

The provincial Minister of Transportation has announced plans to introduce the GTA Farecard , an unified Smartcard -based payment system for the entire Greater Toronto Area similar to the Octopus Card used in Hong Kong . It is expected that DRT will be a participant in this system when it becomes available.

VEHICLES

DRT's fleet initially consists of buses inherited from its predecessor organizations: 43 from Oshawa Transit , 50 from Ajax-Pickering Transit , 22 from Whitby Transit and a few from Clarington Transit . The official fleet will consist of 140 buses and 26 special buses:
