For many years, Hutton was a school teacher and a lecturer at tertiary institutions in South East Queensland including Queensland Institute Of Technology . He has authored a number of books and articles with his partner Dr Libby Connors. Hutton and Dr Conners were married in 1986. Hutton has two adult sons.
