DEMOGRAPHICS In 2004, the Downtown Council conducted a housing study for Downtown Kansas City. Under their definitions of Downtown, it compasses an area of approxomately 2.9 square miles. Their housing study found that Downtown had reached a population of about 15,100 people. In 2000, this number was as low as 13,000 people. In four years, the redevelopment efforts had added nearly 2,000 people to the area. Experts estimate that Downtown will grow by 3,000 to 6,000 people by the year 2010 to a population of from 18,000-21,000 people. In Early 2004, Downtown Kansas City had a density of approx. 5,207 people per square mile in it's 2.9 square mile area. According to Local Market reports, Downtown houses about 20 million square feet of office space. However the vacancy of this space is at about 17% Currently about 2.8 million square feet of office space is under construction in Downtown Kansas City. There is also about $2 billion of money going into re/developing Downtown. TRANSPORTATION City Buses The MAX Launched by the Kansas City Area Transportation Authority (KCATA) in August 2005, "The MAX" (Metro Area Express) is a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) line extending from downtown to the Country Club Plaza . Lots of these busses include GPS recievers so bus stops can give real time data about the next pickup time.
