COURSES

Don Mills is among a handful of schools in Toronto that is home to the Gifted Program . The school also houses CyberARTS . Outside CyberARTS, it offers Computer Technology and Communications Technology courses, As Well As A Comprehensive Technological Design (shop) Program.

ESL - (English as a Second Language) classes are available to assist the newcomers from all over the world.


COMPETITIONS AND EXTRACURRICULARS

The school is also known for its academic excellence, particularly in Math and Science competitions. For the past few consecutive years, Don Mills has been represented in both the International Math Olympiad s and International Physics Olympiad s. In addition to math and Physics , the school has also placed top in Chemistry competitions.

The school maintains a number of extracurricular activities for its students. Among these, the school's student-run newspaper, The BullDog, is one of the few weekly high school publications in Ontario , and consistently wins honours at the '' Toronto Star High School Newspaper Awards''.

In 1998, Don Mills Collegiate Institute was asked by the Toronto District School Board to represent Canada at the inaugural Young People's Summit (YPS), held in conjunction with the annual meeting of G8 countries in Birmingham , England . Delegates from the school took part in discussions on a variety of global issues with representatives from other G8 nations and the European Union , culminating in the release of a joint press communique at the conclusion of the YPS.


STUDENTS

Due to the strength of its academic program, some Don Mills students have gone on to study at prestigious schools and universities throughout North America, including Harvard , Princeton , Cornell , MIT , and Dartmouth College . Graduates have also won major scholarships for post-secondary education at the provincial, national, and international levels.

However, Don Mills is a school that also houses art students in the Cyberarts program and many athletes and musicians.


UNUSUAL RULES

  • Although the school does not require Uniforms , Hat s are forbidden.

  • Students are required to remain still during Morning Announcements ; staff believe this leads students to listen more attentively.

  • The library, which is shared with Don Mills Middle School , only permits students from the middle school every second day, assuming the librarian is present.



TRIVIA

  • Was the school where the cult classic horror movie Prom Night was filmed

  • Sue Johanson (from the Sunday Night Sex Show ) opened the first birth control clinic in a high school here in 1970 (it was called the Don Mills Collegiate Birth Control Clinic)
