Don't Be A Menace To South Central While Drinking Your Juice In The Hood

Whereas ''I'm Gonna Git You Sucka'' was a critical satire of Blaxploitation movies, this film is a critical satire of the 'hood movies' of the 1990s. This film skewers out the racism inherent in the popularity of 'hood movies', no matter their supposed "redeeming qualities".

The result of the massive popularity of 'hood movies' is that black actors are pushed and limited to roles of hoodlums, especially in the 1990s. This movie attempts to skewer that sociological phenomenon.

Some of the main characters include:
  • Preach: The 'politically conscious' man, who looks a lot like Laurence Fishburne.

  • Dashiki: The 'hood mother' with 8 kids all of different men

  • Father: Dispenses sage advice to his son

  • Ashtray: Everyman, trying to make his way through a confusing world

References to ''Boyz N the Hood'' include:
  • Shawn Wayans ' lead character is named Ashtray, as opposed to Cuba Gooding, Jr. 's Trey in ''Boyz N the Hood''.

  • Ashtray is sent by his mother (played by Vivica A. Fox ) to live with his father (in the original played by Laurence 'Larry' Fishburne , here played by an actor younger than Wayans himself) to teach him 'how to be a real man', and the talks about Sex that Gooding has with Fishburne in the original are parodied.

  • In a scene from Boyz N the Hood, Trey and Ricky get pulled over by two police, one being a very dark black man who happens to dislike stereotypical black "gangsters". In a similar scene, Ashtray and Loc Dogg are pulled over while they are parked and a black officer, played by Bernie Mac, is racist against blacks.

  • In Boyz N the Hood, Gooding's character Trey goes to his girlfriend's house and starts swinging his arms, punching wildly while crying, all out of nowhere. In Don't Be a Menace, the character Ashtray goes to his girlfriend Dashiki's house and does the same, but hitting her children instead of air.

  • While sitting on Old School's porch, Loc Dog goes on to say "either they don't know, don't show, or just don't care about being a menace to south central while they drink they juice in the hood...". In a similar scene, Ice Cube 's character, Doughboy, said, "Either they don't know, don't show, or just don't care about what's going on in the hood..."

References to Poetic Justice :

  • A mail truck is used by some of the characters, and there is a line "A road trip in a mail truck... that's about the stupidest idea I ever heard of."

References to Juice :

  • Youngster to grandma: "Now you have the Juice, Grandma."

References to Menace II Society :
  • Ashtray and Loc Dogg (played by Shawn's brother Marlon ) are persecuted by Korean shop owners.

References to hood movies in general:

  • Slow motion drug-making sequence, with spooky music

  • Slow motion 'drive-by shooting preparation' sequence, with spooky music

  • Drive-by shooting sequence

  • Serious father-son talks

Catchphrases:
  • Break yourself fool! (Loc Dogg catchphrase)

  • Message! ( Keenan Ivory Wayans ' only line (besides "What the fuck is he talkin' about?"), usually said when Loc Dogg or Ashtray says something with a good message, that recurs throughout the film. Keenan only appears through the movie to say this, always as a postman)

Quotes From the Film:

  • Ashtray: "Hey pops, you think you can fix my head up a little?"

  • Pops: "Yeah, but that's gonna' run you 'bout 13 dollas, nigga."

  • Ashtray: "13 dollars?!?! But the Spanish dude down the block only charges 6."

  • Pops: "Well then go on and take yo ass down there and let him fuck yo' head up!"

  • (Loc Dogg giving a child alcohol)

  • Man: "Hey, I know you're not gonna give that little kid alcohol."

  • Loc Dogg: "Well you ain't his father."

  • Man: "I'm not? (knocking on Dashiki's door) DASHIKI, BITCH YOU BETTER GIVE ME BACK MY CHILD SUPPORT MONEY!"

  • Korean Man: "I feel bad for your mother."

  • Loc Dogg: "What chu say 'bout my momma, huh, huh? (Shooting and Dry Humping at the same time) BREAK YO' SELF FOOL."

  • Rival Gang: (Pointing a gun in Ashtray's face) "Haha, what chu gon' do now fool"

  • Loc Dogg: "Ay! Do we have a problem here. (Showing his gun in his pants) I SAID, do we have a problem here?"

  • Rival Gang: "Na Na it's cool, it's cool. (Pointing an RPG-7 at Loc Dogg's face.)"

  • Loc Dogg: "Oh ok, so we gon' play that game, huh. ok. (Opening his mail truck to reveal a nuclear bomb) NOW, DO, WE, HAVE, A, PROBLEM?? HMM?"
