HISTORY

Named after a ferry service that traversed the , Washington met at Dobbs Ferry with French allies the Comte De Rochambeau and the Comte De Grasse to plan the Battle Of Yorktown that ended the war with Great Britain . Although historians have long debated whether this meeting took place at present day Dobbs Ferry or at the ferry terminus directly opposite {Link without Title} on the Hudson River, a monument has long stood in Dobbs Ferry at Livingston Manor, the site of the claimed 1781 meeting.


GEOGRAPHY

Dobbs Ferry is located at 41°0'46" North, 73°51'58" West (41.012729, -73.866026).

According to the United States Census Bureau , the village has a total area of 8.2 Km&2 (3.2 Mi&2 ). 6.3 km&2 (2.4 mi&2) of it is land and 1.9 km&2 (0.7 mi&2) of it is water. The total area is 23.03% water.

Commuter service to New York City is available via the Dobbs Ferry Train Station , served by Metro-North Railroad .


DEMOGRAPHICS

As of the Census of 2000, there were 10,622 people, 3,792 households, and 2,570 families residing in the village. The Population Density was 1,680.8/km&2 (4,350.0/mi&2). There were 3,941 housing units at an average density of 623.6/km&2 (1,614.0/mi&2). The racial makeup of the village was 80.70% White , 7.38% African American , 0.08% Native American , 7.56% Asian , 0.09% Pacific Islander , 1.93% from Other Races , and 2.26% from two or more races. 7.00% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 3,792 households out of which 34.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.8% were Married Couples living together, 10.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 27.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.55 and the average family size was 3.13.

In the village the population was spread out with 26.0% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 27.4% from 25 to 44, 24.1% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 95.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 84.5 males.

The median income for a household in the village was $70,333, and the median income for a family was $93,127. Males had a median income of $65,532 versus $50,091 for females.
