The Diocese of Lincoln forms part of the Province Of Canterbury in England .

It traces its roots in an unbroken line to the Diocese of Lindine founded in 678 . Nowadays it is much diminished in size since it was the largest diocese in Europe. Many changes have been made to its boundaries since William The Conqueror established it in 1072 , including the removal of the Diocese Of Peterborough and Diocese Of Oxford in the 16th Century , which left the diocese with two disconnected fragments, north and south. The southern part was transferred to various other dioceses in the 19th Century , whilst in the north the Diocese Of Leicester became part of Peterborough (and then independent later on).
