The diocese includes parishes in Brooklyn , as well as Queens , which at the time of formation was a suburb of New York City . It once included all of Long Island , but it gave up its territory in Nassau County and Suffolk County in 1957 to the Diocese Of Rockville Centre . Brooklyn is one of the few dioceses in the US that is made up of 100% urban territory. It is also perhaps the only diocese that is not part of its larger urban (secular) political structure, as it shares New York City with the Archdiocese Of New York . The Bishop of Brooklyn presides from the Cathedral Basilica Of St. James in Downtown Brooklyn . Many major ceremonies, however, are held at the much larger Basilica Of Our Lady Of Prepetual Help in Southern Brooklyn. He is also the true principal of the diocese's pre-seminary high school, Cathedral Prep . BISHOPS OF THE DIOCESE OF BROOKLYN (TERMS OF SERVICE)
