Information About

Dilandau Albatou

Dilandau Albatou is a main character antagonist in both the Anime series and movie versions of '' The Vision Of Escaflowne ''. He first appears in episode 3 of the series, making frequent appearances thereafter as a persistent nemesis of Van and Allen (protagonists) in eps. 4-7, 9-16, and 23-26. He was voiced by Minami Takayama (Japanese) and Andrew Francis (English).

ETYMOLOGY

Pronunciation: ''Di-Lan-dou (''Di''-ra-n-do-o in the manga) ''A''-r(u)-ba-ta-u

The Japanese "r" Phoneme is used to approximate the "l" phoneme in foreign or fictional languages such as Gaean. The Japanese "r" phoneme sounds similar the English "l" phoneme when spoken not quite at the tip of the tongue (as in "Dilandau"), or a slightly rolled English "r" phoneme. The official romanized spelling is Dilandau Albatou; the different katakana for the animated television/movie versions and the manga version give a clue as to the rest of the pronunciation. The "u" in the "ru" syllable is basically silent here.

PERSONALITY

Dilandau could be described as fascinatingly insane. He is charismatic, arrogant, vain, smug, egocentric, maniacal, ruthless, violent, cocky, insubordinate, obsessive, impulsive, capricious, moody, prone to megalomania. As the leader of Zaibach's Ryuugekitai (Dragon Slayers), Dilandau frequently abuses his subordinates and defies his superiors. He displays severe deficiencies in the areas of self-control, compassion, and conscience. He loves battle, excessive destruction, and fire. Yet, his sadistic tendencies belie a troubled past and a more complex character, depicted in flashbacks and psychological breaks.

The further the series progresses, the more glimpses given into Dilandau's Manic-depressive personality. Dilandau is gradually revealed to be emotionally dependent on the Ryuugekitai . For their part, despite his harsh treatment, they are fanatically loyal to him even unto death (and beyond). The degree of his abandonment issues become clear in a dramatic psychotic meltdown -- an allusion to the identity "tampering" he has endured.

APPEARANCE

Dilandau is 175 cm (~5'8") tall and weighs 61 kg (~135 lbs), giving him a very slender Androgynous look. He is Pale, With Silver-white Hair And "garnet" Eyes . He is prone to a wide variety of unsettling facial expressions, including his trademark sadistic smirk. During Episode 5, he sustains a sword scar on his right cheek, during close combat with Van Fanel, king of Fanelia. This both infuriates and unhinges Dilandau, marring his "beautiful face" and triggering his emotional psychosis.

ZAIBACH

He is the leader of an elite military unit of Guymelef soldiers known as the Ryuugekitai (Dragon Slayers) of the Zaibach Red Copper Army. He is nominally affiliated with the Zaibach Empire, but more likely owes true allegiance only to himself and peripherally, the Ryuugekitai. Dilandau is consistently insubordinate to his superiors, with the exception of the Emperor Dornkirk, to whom he shows some respect.

His red Guymelef is an Alseides model (with flight capability, stealth cloak, Flame-thrower and liquid-metal Crima Claw), and later in the series an Oreades model (can also fly while in stealth mode).

FURTHER DETAILS

In a plot twist in the anime series he is also revealed to be Allen's sister, Celena. In several dream sequences towards the end of the series that occur after the deaths of the Ryuugekitai, flashes of his childhood are seen. Eventually, as Dornkirk's Fate Machine alterations begin to break down, he alternates between male and female form, reflecting an increasing mental instability and a dichotomous split personality/identity. As Celena, s/he seems to be locked in a naive, childlike state, shown rather disturbingly in a garden scene and a later event at the grave of s/he and Allen's mother. Ultimately, Celena and Allen are reunited in the series finale.

MOVIE

In contrast to the series, Dilandau was a Draconian half-breed with the same psychic abilities as Van and Folken. He was given the ancient armor Alseides, though it was ripped to shreds by Escaflowne. In the end of the movie, Dilandau and his Ryuugekitai departed to points unknown.
