Information About

Deutz Ag

During the World War II , the company was ordered to produce artillery and took on the name 'Klöckner Humbolt Deutz AG' although both names have been used ever since, even by the company itself.

Parts and service are abundant in the Netherlands and Germany. In the United States and Canada, Deutz engines were viewed as esoteric, with parts expensive and often unavailable, until a network of strong distributors was established a few years ago.

Deutz powered commercial vehicles were popular in the years 1960-1980,sold under the name of Magirus Deutz, but suffered from their continued use of a liquid free cooling system, and misunderstanding resulted.

The phrase "Air Cooled" was used extensively to describe the Deutz engine, but this is slightly confusing, as virtually all internal combustion engines are cooled by Air with water just being the medium for transferring the heat from the engine, to the external cooling air.

The main cause of overheating in internal combustion engines, is due to a defect in the water circulation system.

By using Direct Air cooling, with no need for an intermediate liquid to assist, the Deutz engine was extremely reliable, due to its inherent simplicity.

If there is no Radiator, Hoses, Water Pump, etc. then these problem points are eliminated !

The Deutz engine can only overheat if the finned cylinders become blocked with sand or dust under extreme arduous conditions, for example Desert or underground mine areas.

Should overheating occur it was necessary to remove one bolt, remove one washer ( put in pocket ) to give maximum speed to the oil driven fan, hence reducing the operating temperature to below optimum, with a resulting reduction in fuel economy, but still retaining full engine performance until the cooling fins could be pressure cleaned.

If a "liquid cooled" vehicle overheats, you would need to be in the fortunate position of carrying the required replacement parts with you, having the expertise to replace them, and then having a ready supply of replacement water.

The "Air Cooled" alternative is to remove an existing washer, and continue on your way !

The lack of a water jacket enables a quicker engine warm up, as there is no water to heat up.
The dew point temperature where most engine wear occurs is passed very quickly, as water cooled vehicles tend to hang around at this temperature on the warm up curve.

Add to the above benefits, the impossibilty of a freeze up, and you may agree that the Deutz Air Cooled was highly misunderstood, and only suffered "Bad Press" due to the inflexibilty of commercial vehicle operators who refused to consider this amazing alternative.
