Information About

Derek Riordan

In many ways he is reminiscent of a typical old-style Scottish footballer: wonderfully skillful, two-footed and with the audacity to attempt and often achieve the outrageous. Unfortunately, his attitude off the pitch has come into question. He signed for Hibs, his boyhood favourites, in 2000 and made his debut the following year. After several seasons of continual improvement,he is currently their top scorer this season again having finished the previous 2 seasons as top scorer with 18 & 23 goals.

TRANSFER SPECULATION

At the end of the 2004/05 season Riordan rejected a contract offer and was subsequently transfer-listed. In August 2005 a £1 million fee was agreed for transfer to English championship club Cardiff City , but he rejected the move.

During the January 2006 transfer window, Rangers had a bid turned down for Riordan worth £250,000 on transfer deadline day 31 January 2006 . Two bids from "foreign" clubs were accepted, but Riordan rejected these potential moves.

His present contract with Hibernian expires in October 2006. There has been much speculation as to whom his next contract will be with. Given that he has previously rejected moves from foreign clubs, it is thought that he would prefer to stay in Scotland . This would constrict his options severely, given that only three clubs ( Hearts , Celtic and Rangers ) currently pay significantly higher wages than Hibernian.

He would be highly unlikely to move to Hearts, as they are Hibernian's local and major rival. Celtic are already well covered in the attacking positions, with players such as Shaun Maloney , Craig Beattie , Maciej Żurawski and Aiden McGeady . Rangers made an offer to Hibernian in the January window, but they have since announced that they will appoint a new manager ( Paul Le Guen ) during the summer. Le Guen may not be keen to follow up this previous interest in Riordan, as he will have a greater knowledge of French players.

There has been speculation in recent times that Riordan may sign an extended contract with Hibernian, which was hitherto thought unlikely.

INTERNATIONAL HONOURS

Riordan has been capped once by Scotland at International level, appearing as a substitute against Austria in Graz in August 2005 .
