He has served as Mayor of Brentwood, Chairman of Essex Education Committee, twice as Chairman of constituency associations and twice as a general election agent. He has also served as a member of the local health authority. He is a retired secondary school teacher and a chartered biologist. He was first elected to the Parish Council in 1983 and then in 1985 to the County Council where he served for 12 years and became Chairman of the Education Committee and Deputy Leader of the Liberal Democrat Group. He entered Brentwood Council at a by-election that established the Lib Dems with an overall majority, and has served as Chair of Environment. He is currently Chair of the Overview and Scrutiny Committee and is a member of the Planning and Licensing Committees. Derek strongly supports preservation of the Green Belt and has been involved in many campaigns to support village life and village services. |
