According to the Canada 2001 Census , the Population of the former Township Of Delhi was 16,365, although the actual town is smaller. Delhi is famous for the surrounding Tobacco fields, and is known as the tobacco Capital of Ontario . For such a small town, Delhi is known as a reasonably Multicultural place. There are Belgian , German , Polish and Hungarian halls, as well as several other ethnic communities, including Dutch , Portuguese , Greeks , Ukrainians , Lithuanians , Britons . Surnames of people from different nationalities can be spotted at the Delhi Cemetery . Although it was traditionally a Roman Catholic cemetery, anyone who lives or has lived in Delhi can now be buried at that particular cemetery. Also, Jamaicans , Mexicans , and French Canadians work the farms around Delhi and other towns of Norfolk County during the spring, summer, and fall months. They usually arrive around mid-to late February and return to their homelands around early-to-mid November. Until recently, Delhi was a separate municipality with its own town council and mayor. The last mayor of the Township of Delhi, Roger Vermulen, did not run for office when the Township was amalgamated into the new Norfolk County in 2000 . The New Norfolk County lies geographically to the east of Oxford County , to the south of Brant County , and to the west of Haldimand County , which it still shares a loose amalgamation. Haldimand-Norfolk is a political riding with Toby Barrett currently sitting as MPP and Diane Finley as MP. Norfolk County, and therefore Delhi's mayor is Rita Kalmbach. Delhi has a Cable TV service, which receives fewer channels than its counterparts in Simcoe and Port Dover . |
